Student Debt Edges Closer to $ 1 Ttrillion Dollars

Most interesting point in the second article to me , was about how a person working a menial job all their life and saving 5% of their income, would potentially be better off at retirement, than a college graduate who had a student loan to pay off.

There is a lot of false information of what a degree does for someone, one is the idea that a degree makes you more money during your lifetime, which would be true if someone didn't get a degree where the competition is great - like a teaching degree.

The other thing that many miss is a fact that when the government subsidize education, the cost for the student goes up - a lot.

At one time, you could work your way through school, even at Harvard, but now the cost is so disprotioned to the income of the student.

An education is no longer a place for higher learning but a business, a great big business. We can look at schools in detail and they seem to be easily compared to any large company, GE, BP, Microsoft - take your pick.

Unfortunately, my three will be saddled with what would equate to a fairly sizable mortgage payment upon graduation in a few years. They are all "paying" their way through school with a combination of loans, work study, grants and scholarships. Not really sure how it will all pan out for them.

Chef, yes we are/were but will be joining you on the road before too long. Too much politics in education. We were at a small public k-12 charter school.
