How do we....

OVM,
Let's see, the empire of the great Khan was the largest empire the world has ever seen, but the price paid for that was the slaughter of millions of people. It fell becuase Genghis died and the empire was handed to his third son who in turn also died and it became a mess form that point on, falling around 1400, only 200 years old.

The roman empire, well we can take serious lessons from them. One of the biggest issue I speak of is citizen involvement, which was one of the factors that led to the split and than later the fall of the empires. The need to put sports before civic responsiblity, the split in religion, the outsourcing of key operations within the empire and the people who became lazy and complacent - all were factors.

The UK? Well they are where we are right now when they started to feel that the great empire was headed down the tubes - this happened some time in the late 19th century with the problems of Indian imports of textiles gutting the English textile industry. Once they got involved with the first world war, they were lost. There is now a serious examination why they got involved and if they didn't, what would have happened - kind of interesting to read that many feel that the world would have been better to let Germany walk into France and Belgium the first time and let them dictate the conditions of peace.

Glad you didn't bring up france.

Oh, if there is a concern about us falling, here is how we really prevent it, stop saying we are a democracy, stop messing with the political system by having elections to elect people, get the people involved with the best political system the world has ever seen and don't vote to make history or fill some gap caused by guilt that one should never have.

greg, isn't the length of time for an influential civilization about 200 years? indian textiles gutting english textiles? we don't have a textile industry any longer. is that the first sign of a civilizations decline?
who comes next?

How do we stop the fall of this country? Like the great superpowers before us all fell.....
Here is my humble opinion. To prevent this nation from falling as other great empires have, we must do 2 things. Or, atleast start with these 2 things. First off, we need to change our attitudes about social programs. I know there are some in this country that need assistance with food, medical expenses, etc. But, aside from those who are really in need, there are quite a few of us that need to rethink how we feel. We need to end this "big government, big spending, and big tax mentality". End the thinking that there is a free lunch out there and Uncle Sammy will pick up the tab. Even though people like Hillary talk about taxing the rich...we all know the ones who will really pay are the ones who are drawing a paycheck. Besides, in my opinion...its not a wealthy persons responsibility to pay my way. Its my responsibility to provide for my own needs. If we all assume the responsibility for ourselves (unless your really unable) our nation will start going in the right direction again. The second thing we need to do is elect people to office who feel the same way.

Yes that is what the historians say, 200 years is average. I think the exception is Rome, England and The US. We can reach back sometime before Rome to Greece and Egypt, oh and Persia but Rome may also be questionable.

India textiles gutted the English rural industry, much like what is happening with us and China. At that time, they had a good export market but once everything started to move in India, their exports were ten fold by the latter part of the 19th century. Not unlike China, they flooded the market with cheap goods. The parallel in this is that at one time the british Empire used a lot of home based manufacturing and India and other colonies brought cheap goods to the English market, forcing the home based manufacturing out. In our case we also have a very serious education problem, with the retiring and deaths of manufacturing professionals here, we will lose the knowledge of how to make things. Instead of teaching our kids how to do manual labor things, like work on a car, we are telling them to go to college and this further widens the gap for us which in turn forces us to import labor and knowledge. This is partial an answer to your last question, what are the first signs – dumbing down the population.
