No offense to anyone here that lives in the Detroit area, but I never felt like I was missing out on anything when I saw it fading in my rear view mirrors. I know many saw the same thing of where I'm from. I guess it is all perspective.

Yep, Detroit USED to be one of the most prospores cities in the world. Many things have contributed to it's fall. An un-willingness to change with changing economics condititons. An un-willingness to diverisfy the economy. High taxes on industry. An education system that is geared towards heavy industry and no emphisis on modern businss models. An overall anti-business attitude, contributed to by unions and socialist tax dis-incentives. A general "you owe me" attitude by large numbers of people in the area. This was fostered by government programs that encorage laziness. Why work if you will be paid not too? This frees you up to sell drugs or whatever you crime of choice is. Layoutshooter

We have some of that in the Mississippi River Delta as well. People who say they can make more at home than they can working. Plus many on "disability" who spend the summers working on the rice farms for cash. On top of the disability they get food stamps and subsidies.

I remember when I was a kid(which wasn't that long ago) most churches maintained some sort of food closet that had canned goods and what not donanted by various church members. When someone in the church fell on hard times the church would give them food from the closet and take some money from a fund that had been donated to buy things like meat and milk. I also remember the church taking up "love offerings" for different ones that had fallen on hard times to help pay different bills. Then when I was a teenager people would come in that we had never seen before demanding help because they heard we had given it to others. They didn't care that they others were members of the church and had contributed to helping others in the past. So a lot of those things don't exist anymore. People had gotten tired of being burned by free loaders and bums.

My brother in law, who is a minister, says people call his office all the time and ask if his church pays peoples light bills. No hi how are doing, just do yall pay light bills.

That is because people have been taught in public schools for years that they are "Owed" these things by thier "All seeing, All knowning and All Loving" government. They have been teaching and re-assuring that THEY will look out for you. THEY will insure that if you work hard and earn a good living that THEY will steal it from those who do and give to those who don't. It is called fair. It is NOT fair that some work harder than others and earn more so we have to level the field and insure that those who don't work have as much as those who do. Layoutshooter

My first trip into Detroit reminded me of Dante's Inferno. Visions of Hell. Now, several years later, my opinion remains unchanged.
