It means the same as "what planet are you living on?!" In other words, your perceptions differ from mine. A LOT. Where you see an increasing leftward tilt, I see conservative rightwing ideology (and the attentant namecalling of public persons and 'liberals') coming out of the woodwork here, to the point that the Soapbox has lately become a bulletin board for said viewpoint, rather than a forum for discussion.

Piling on refers to additional players tackling an opponent who is CLEARLY a threat no longer. That does not describe the posting of comments in agreement with other folks. It's only the poster whose statements are countered by several (or many) others that characterizes it as such.
