What to Expect for Income Driving for a Fleet Owne

After reading and reading and reading on this forum, it appears that the smart thing to do is to hire on when first getting into this business with a fleet owner to "test the waters." While the two of us are headstrong and ready to jump into this business, we both know that we need to learn the "ropes" and the best way is letting someone fund us to gain the experience.

We would appreciate any input as to what kind of money we could anticipate making running a "D" unit. We are very much planning on getting a reefer unit (brought that topic up), but are ready to start with a dry unit to gain experience knowledge.

RE: What to Expect for Income Driving for a Fleet

The usual pay is around a 60/40 split. It certainly helps to run someone elses truck before making a big plunge. Income will depend on how well you run your truck as well as how good the company is in keeping you loaded. Some are good and some are not, and some that are good this year, may not be next. An example of this would be a company that over recruits trucks to the amount of freight they haul. It seems to be a common thing lately.
Yes you did read all the pros and cons on the reefers and I think you are playing it smart. I push that subject hard because after 20 years in expediting I have seen so many make that plunge and it went south. Even worse are the ones that put up their house and everything else. I don't recommend that a new person invest $150,000 on a new rig with little or no experience. Kinda like opening a doctors office and knowing nothing about medicine.
