What is High Mileage?

Hello Gang, I'm in the market for a Used but not abused, Straight truck. What would be considered High Mileage? One I have in mind is a 2000 FL80 with a 250hp. 3126 Cat,4.63 rear, with 480,295 miles. Trans is a FSO-8406A Fuller 6 Speed. The cosmetics are great. The truck has all the bells a whisles. 96" RR Single Bunk, 22' box, Air Ride Cab, and much more. Should I consider purchasing this or pass, because of mileage? The Price is $35,900

Read through the Archives here about that CAT Engine.Unless you have proof that it's been rebuilt I would stay away from it.

Don't take anyone's word on that rebuild. Get proof of it and ask to see the bill. There was one of those babies that was traded in here in Cincinnati at FYDA Freightliner, the owner told FYDA it had been rebuilt. Well the fellow that bought it from FYDA broke down very shortly after the purchase and if I have the story right they ended up putting an engine in the truck for the guy. Now you may not get that lucky if someone tells you a rebuild story. If it was me, after I saw the paperwork, I would then run the Vin# and even talk to the folks that did it. That risk is too big. If has been done maybe ok to get. What transmission is it. That is also a concern. I would also check the rear end. I am just pointing out what I know and an example of misleading info given to a dealer. If they can fool the dealer, well you know.

The Owner who once went by RACEMAN but due to the outcome of the Nextel Cup, am now just 6.

If the truck was in perfect shape, maybe it it would bring that $$. Otherwise start deducting for less than perfect condition. Too many miles for big money unless that engine is fresh. Bigger horsepower worth more money. Good luck.

I agree, 250 HP won't be the answer to a D unit expediter's dream regardless of condition. Also, I think the price is too high for that year and mileage.

Thanks for all the replys and help. I checked back on that truck and someone has already bought it. Sounds like thats Good for me and maybe Bad for them. I hope not. I also looked at other trucks at this location, and it seems all have real High mileage. You say a Cat-250 is to small for a D-unit. What should I be looking for? I've checked just about all Dealers available here on EO. Is there any place better to find the truck I need. I would like to stay under $40k if possible. I plan on Going to Orientation by the end of Jan. Drive Safely...Butch
