VA Travel Reimbursement Increased

Week of February 04, 2008
Over a million eligible veterans will now see their mileage reimbursement more than double for travel to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities. The 2008 appropriations act provided funding for VA to increase the travel reimbursement rate from 11 cents per mile to 28.5 cents per mile. The increase went into effect on Feb. 1. This is the first increase in the mileage reimbursement in 30 years. VA also increased the deductible amounts applied to certain mileage reimbursements. The new deductibles are $7.77 for a one way trip, $15.54 for a round trip, with a maximum of $46.62 per calendar month. However, these deductibles can be waived if they cause a financial hardship to the veteran.

Thats a new one on me. I didn't know about this,so if I drive to a VA Hospital in Gainesville FL about 80 miles to have a test done, I could claim $45.60 minus the deductible. I assume there must be some type of claim form. I am going to check with my local VA Clinic today, good info and ARK you need to look into this also.

The last I was told was they only paid for travel if you live more than 50 miles from the nearest VA. I don't live more 50 miles away from the Little Rock VA. Plus since I am 100% VA disabled I pay no deductibles,co-payments, and have no bills. I will look into it though.

I know a few guys at the Little Rock VA got in trouble for going to the cashier and collecting travel pay when they rode the DAV van to the VA. When they ride the van they aren't supposed to collect the travel pay, but they do get a meal ticket for a free plate lunch in the cafeteria.
