A decommissioned US Navy ship has been scuttled in the Cayman Islands to create an underwater attraction for scuba divers.

The 251-foot long, five-deck military submarine rescue ship, the USS Kittiwake, was scuttled off the north end of Seven Mile Beach and settled on the ocean floor to become an artificial reef providing divers with a year-round diving destination.

The 2,290-ton vessel served the US maritime administration for nearly 50 years until it was decommissioned in 1994
