Try Again???

Found a truck on EO that I can afford, and is currently leased to a carrier. No longer fat and happy, realize I need to work really hard at this...last 3 years were tough, not whining, just a fact, now much wiser, smarter, and learned a LOT of humility. Plan on being out 3 weeks at a time and run solo. Given the present state of the economy, and every other factor that expediters face, what is the opinion of the forum members about trying again with a C unit? (If I could pick up the lease if I were to buy this truck?) Need some guidance as this truck is used but seems to be in good shape and well maintained, and the seller seems to be an honest person. Can a solo take home an average of $350-$400 a week net in a C unit? (That's what I do driving the school bus) How much reserve cash do you think I should have just for the truck, not living expenses? Please... any and all SINCERE replies would be deeply appreciated.

God bless

OK,

I wrote a few post about what I went through buying a used truck.

Depending on what it is and where it is makes a difference with the quality of the dealership.

I would take your time, I would have the truck Vischecked, engine dyno'ed, the oil and coolant analysed and the ECM dumped. al thse things will give you a picture of the true condition of the truck.

As for your question about making money with a c unit, that goal spread out over the year is acheivable.

Hi. You say it is leased to a carrier already? Just make sure that it's leased to them as a solo, and not as a team truck. Some carriers aren't taking on solos due to current Hours of Service rules. Some will.

Not to get nosey, but if you only need to take home the same money you are making driving a school bus, then why do you want the headache of owning your own truck, especially since you wont be home as much.
It depends where you live, and your expenses on truck, whether you can make that $400.00 your talking about.
As I'm in a tractor, and team,I can only guess, but you should be able to net at least $400.oo/week.
Good luck

First thing you need to do is get in touch with the carrier and see if they will be putting you on if you buy the truck also you didn't mention what year the truck was as some carriers won't put on a truck that is 3 to 5 years old. B and C units anyway.

Best of Luck,

Some people think a C unit is the only way to go. I'm in the D unit camp. The cost and operating expenses are very similar but the pool of potential jobs is much larger and with that the revenue is greater. The D unit is also going to give you more options if/when you need to get a backhaul to get home now or get out of Dodge.

The (goal) as you put it, or bar as I will put it seems to be lying on the ground. Keep that attitude of SURVIVAL and one is almost guaranteeing ones failure. Raise the bar, and than maybee more of us might want to see you, and aide you in succeeding.

I enjoy the company of successfull people, much more than those who just wana get by. How does one get by on 300-400 a week? Its to much of a committment in my prospective to even consider such a #.

Good luck on the lease.
