To Those Who Drive Night Shift....

After reading about Lisa's DOT Inspection and Logs, it made me wonder about that one question I keep asking my husband about logging a post trip at midnight.
If I start driving at 10:00pm and do not stop until 2:00am to fuel, should I still be doing a post trip at midnight? And if I don't, is that an actual log violation?

When I was a Co. driver I had a lot of overnight runs and I always did a post-trip at the end of the run or the end of the driving day. Never got any grief from the Co. or a couple of scale stops.

Just to be on the safe side, even running as a team, I would log a 15 minute post trip eventhough your partner will be logging a pre-trip. Could save you a lot of hassels!

The post trip inspection is exactly what it says, "Post Trip" it must be performed at the "End" of your current shipment. A Pre-Trip, on the other hand is just that, must be completed each and every time you get behind the wheel. So always show a pre-trip as a 15 minute interval "on duty not driving"

I used to be a log auditor for a small company in Michigan. You do not have to show anything at midnight whatsoever. You only have to show your pre-trip when you start driving, your post trip at the end of your driving and your fueling. You are wasting 15 minutes on duty for nothing.

I don't believe you do anything at midnight except continue driving. Pre and post trip inspections are done prior to beginning any driving and after finishing all driving. I never log anything at midnight unless I'm changing duty status at that time. Ask your company's log department what their policy is just to be sure.

Must be a company thing, cause I don't mark when I do the post trip. Just sign the little inspection thingy. I was told all we're required to mark is a pretrip, either 15 mins or flagged. DOT hasn't told me otherwise.
