I was listening to this public radio talk show....and they had this spokeswoman from some anti-immigration/Amnesty group...

That immigration in the late 1800's and early 1900's before Soc/Sec. This country people came with the intent and knowledge that when they came they would WORK hard, build a life of thier own, pay taxes, contribute to the country, learn english and be assimulated into American culture...This was before ANY social programs and they built a great country....BUT then comes the social programs...S/S, welfare, food stamps, subsidized this and that, rather then contributing they are mostly subtracting...If they make a low wage, rather then have 2 jobs they get subsidized at the taxpyers expense. And since at least a third of these are illegal...it's even worse.
So in less then a 100 years we've gone from a do-it-yourself state to a welfare state and by todays problem it shows the difference.

Am I catching on?:confused:

OVM, you’re close.

The problem is this;

No one knows what it really is like to live under a system that worked. No one alive remembers what it was like in 1907. No one alive remembers what it was like to receive cash for their labor.

We always had social programs, they were on the local and state level and they worked. Even if someone was poor, a lot of the time they received what they needed. I got several stories about the depression before FDR took over.

ALSO remember this, a lot of the things that FDR put in place were either based on the Soviet Union or part of Hoover’s ideas he was running under.

Awe come on Greg gimme a break...you and the other 3 musketeers are always referring to the way it was and we should go back to the basics, the founders had intended....now, your saying no one alive has experienced it. How can you know what you want, if you never had it? Is there some assumptions on somes part?

Yes it is true, no one knows what it is like to live as the founding fathers intended it to be but that is not what the problem is, it is many don't want to learn what it really means to live like that.

I stand by the fact that we have more problems than we did in the 1930s with the great depression.

OK I am going to tell you the same thing I told Cheryl, read The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes which really shows you where we came form and what is going on right now and WHY. Also I would say read the essay The Forgotten Man by Sumner it really explains the welfare idea.

When people talk about the way it was, it is relative to the person. I believe I don't want to return to the 60's with social programs and attitudes but I would like to see the country return to the 40's. Others long for the 60's because that is what they know. My experience and education came from people who were from the 19th century, my grandparents, my neighbors and my other relatives. I knew many WW1 vets and even one person who was good friends with TR. I learned to ask questions, to get an idea of what it was like to feed my need to learn. They were great to show me what it was like to think for yourself, to be able to make it on your own and to build up a family with real freedoms.

FDR was a total socialist, we live with the results now. Entire generations sucking off of the government tit. Lazy, stupid and for the most part criminals. What a great idea. Layoutshooter

Can you imagine what it must of been like back when...?

No Tree huggers, no Naacp, no ACLU...no corporations....politicians that owed no favors...no lobby groups...then no subsidies To be rewarded only by the amount of work you put into it...:)

Imagine this one. Early in the history of Virginia, when it was still a colony, there was a 5 year period that it was illegal for a lawyer to live there!!! I got one, let's make illegal for a lawyer to be a lawmaker. Kind of a conflict of interest. Layoutshooter
