Nope, we’re not talking about old farts nor hagred looking or acting relatives, husbands, girlfriends or otherwise. This is a true to life experience regarding the ever elusive I-75 Mountain Goat.
A few years ago, while part of a group of tourists hiking a snowpack trail in Glacier Nat’l Park, we watched majestic, mountain goats with huge curled horns standing on the side of a steep, rocky mountain. Now, fast forward a few years and imagine driving I-75 in SE KY and seeing hairy movement ON a limestone outcrop. My mind kept saying……… “naw, it couldn’t be”??
Heading N/B between London and Berea at 3 pm, from a distance I viewed a whitish animal drop from the lower portion of the steep limestone outcrop onto ground level. The goat was stationary, looking at traffic. As the van got closer, I witnessed a “not the normal farm” type, rather a shortish, stumpy legged, complete with tiny horns –mountain goat?? Again, my brain continued to say “naw, it couldn’t be”, although my eyes were in disagreement. This evening, I did a google search and simply could not find a fundamentally sound reference to mountain goats in KY (although I did find some tidbits). SO, there is NO way these “peepers” deceived me – thus I’m stickin’ to the story and formally name the species - The I-75 Mountain Goat.
