The other post was getting loooooooong with post so...
With all the talk bout diff units that you can get and what not - from ppc's to tom toms, etc. Here is a solution that I have used.
1st your going to need this:
http://store.mp3car.com/Lilliput_8_VGA_Touch_Screen_TFT_LCD_Display_p/mon-005.htm
Now you can get a 10" but if you have a small dash it might not fit.
2nd your going to need:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/desktops?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
Now you could get that anywhere but I like the small form factor
3rd:
software of your choosing, co pilot, streets, any or all! Winamp for music, etc
Lastly:
www.deepsurplus.com
Some various cables, extension etc.

Now you mount the touchscreen on the dash, computer in the glove box(those dells are SMALL), a small converter, some wiring and BAM!
You have a full function computer on your dash. Load up winamp for music, co pilot for directions and your off. Waiting at the dock for hours? Load up excel and get your paperwork done. 3am and on a back road in AK? Get a cell pc card and go on the net - post msg here, play poker. Na just kidding (yes I know, i got flac for that one from everyone before)

Total cost? $600 hardware tops(now I don't pay for software, but if you do figure in another $300-400) and your going to get a way better system than anything like a ppc or tom tom! If is anyone interested and is in the minneapolis area I can show some mock ups. And if your really interested I can build/install is for you.

Extras you can do:
put in rear view camera and view it on the screen
Logging via pc, ddl works great on this small screen

Magic,

Good concept! You could even run a dual monitor set up, and run a keyboard into the sleeper. I just wonder how the computer would handle the bouncing around in the glove box tho. How would you secure it so it was safe, but got adequate airflow for a desktop?

The one time I tried to put my DELL down on the floor to mve around the truck stop, the vibration destroyed the hard rive.

Lessons learned Cushion that laptop, as well as possible. Or purchase one made more for a rough environment. Like maybe a Panasinic Toughbook. (Whoops! there goes the budget,About $3600,)

Well I never had an issue with the hard drive but if your truck bounces a lot, look into getting a laptop drive - more durable and not much more expensive.

Umm - what glovebox? I don't think the FL Century has one....but then, it might - I have to admit that I just saw an armrest on the door side of the driver's seat that I hadn't noticed before, lol. :+
PS: Magic, you know we only blasted you for playing on the 'puter while you were driving, not in the bunk!

Well i got bored staring into darkness - poker seemed like a good choice :( On the Fl70's and newer trucks I put them in the over head compartment somewhere or under the passenger seat.
