Tag Axle Question

It has been many years since I have driven a vehicle with Tag Axles.

My question is this:

If you are under a load, do the tag axles have to be in the down position automatically because you are loaded, or Only when the weight of the Load requires you to put them down.

For some reason, I'm thinking many moons ago that if you were loaded, they had to be down regardless of weight.

Was this ever true or true today?

I believe you are referring to a lift axle. A lift axle only needs to be down to supplement the legal load capacity of another axle or group of axles. A tag axle is always down.
