Hollywood is mourning the passing of Bill McKinney, the Deliverance mountain man character who immortalized the phrase, "Squeal like a pig," in his amorous pursuit of Ned Beatty.
Many of us Appalachians remain convinced this movie did more harm to the virtuous image of mountain folk than all other cinematic stereotypes combined. Indeed, Deliverance brought incalculable injury to the perception of Appalachians as a welcoming people. Jon Voight would never have suffered the indignity of being tied to a tree.
