Folks,

Let me tell you the real-life, real-time story of two brothers, Tom and Jim, currently in a snow storm somewhere in western Montana.

Tom has been a van expediter out of Charlotte for 3 years. His brother Jim (retired with a pension) is going to start expediting out of Youngstown, OH, (right along the I-80 corridor, NE Ohio). Jim decided to go with his brother on a trip from Ohio to Vancouver, BC. to learn the expediting lifestyle, (which he will...dramatically).

Now enter me, Dave, Jim's brother-in-law. I have a Class A CDL, have not driven for a long time, don't want to drive T/Ts. I would love to help out my b-in-law occasionally, and make some $ myself. We have a great relationship. Questions:

1. Does my CDL have any effect on van driving?
2. How does insurance work? He is going with CIS, I think.
3. He is going to be independent, (loads through his brother)
4. I have a 1/2 ton p/u truck. Can that be used for shorter, one-way loads?

Thanks for any info. Great website.

Dave

CDL; no bearing because you wouldn't have to run a log book.
Questions 2-4 I can't answer but there are many others on here who couls answer that. There is also other forums on here, ie; the newbies paradise forum, the welcome center and the recruiters forum. If you don't get any responses soon, I would try one of the other forums and see if you could find some answers there.

I think you would have a tough time using your p/u anywhere else but if his brother has freight that will fit in it... and the shipper is ok with it.... there's no reason you couldnt. I think you would need a camper/topper of some sort to keep the freight dry. I wouldnt expect to get a lot of work with just a p/u but it could happen.

I loaded at a place in OK last month and there was a p/u there getting loaded at the same time. They sat one skid on his p/u, he closed the hatch and was gone. Looked like it worked to me.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Re: the pick up, I am thinking it would be an "every now and then" thing.

Even if you could protect the freight from the weather, could you secure it properly? You'd be asking for big trouble if not - the insurance might well refuse to cover damage to freight they determine was not properly secured.
Speaking of insurance, if it's CIS, John or Shelly can answer your questions more knowledgeably than we can - they're both excellent people. :)
