This is circulating as an email from a police officer. It is a fake. That said, it's still good advice to 1. be aware of your surroundings and 2. drive to a new location before getting out to fool with your car.

BEWARE OF PAPER IN THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE

NEW WAY TO DO CAR JACKING

You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into Reverse. When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off.

They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the car jacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the
paper later.

Most people walk to their cars from the rear after they've pulled into a parking space, so they'll probably notice the paper on the rear window before they get into the car. I'd be surprised if a carjacking ever took place in that manner. Inventive and creative, tho.

One that does happen, a lot, especially in the winter, is people who pull up to a convenience store and hop out and run into the store, leaving the car running. Just as they enter the store someone else enters their car and poof. I think it's Quick Trip who is putting signs up in the store as a reminder for people to take the keys out of the car.

That would frequently be the case but at least here at home most parking is angle parking and if you drive down the aisle toward the building you'd be coming up from the hood quite often. In a large, busy lot like a Walmart there are often people walking around that could be the perpetrator if this very scheme and wouldn't draw suspicion as they're just another of the many many people.

As I said, it's been determined to be a hoax but it is certainly doable and reminds of the need for awareness when out in public.
