A week’s worth of competing against the clock, each other and some rough and ready livestock came to a close for more than 1,500 contestants Saturday night in Gillette, Wyo., as the 2010 National High School Finals Rodeo crowned individual champions in 12 events.
A pair of South Dakota cowboys finished in the top six in steer roping Saturday night in the championship performance as Jace Melvin of Fort Pierre turned in a 4.483-second effort to take third. Taz Olson of Prairie City roped his steer in 5.408 for sixth place.
Trey Young of Dupree finished fourth in tie-down roping on Saturday evening with a time of 9.184 seconds. Fellow South Dakota cowboy, Cole Fulton of Miller, wound up eighth with a 10.858 effort.
Taylor Engesser of Spearfish finished ninth in goat tying with a time of 9.73 seconds and wound up with a seventh-place finish in the All-Around Rookie Cowgirl standings with 180 points.
Kamie Elshere of Faith earned 10th place in barrel racing, with Amy Deichert of Spearfish finishing 15th.
Rapid City’s Chet Smith posted a 78 in the final performance of the second go-round in the saddle bronc competition on Saturday morning.
Team South Dakota had a solid overall showing as it compiled 2,470 points, which put it in eighth place overall. Texas was the only team to crack the 5,000 point-plateau with a
total of 5,087.50.
The South Dakota boys’ team cracked the top five after 12 performances with 1,790 points, while the girls team wound up in 13th place.
The 2011 NHSFR will return to Gillette next July 17-23 before calling Springfield, Ill., home in 2012-13.
