Go to NAPA, buy a few aerosol cans of 'Decal Remover', medium blue can about the size of a shaving cream can, black lid (may be in paint section).
Spray liberally on about 4' of the sign, stand back and let it bubble up. It will become a heavy vinyl banner almost and you peel it off in hugh chunks. A razor may be needed to help it along.
It will still have residue on the truck, you can then use a simple citrus/chemical gum/tar/sticker removal to get it off with the razor.
The key - let the chemical do the work! (Took 2.5-3 hrs to get Conway signage off a 22' box).

RE: removing stickers-Best!
Been there, done that. Remember the big red arrow? Got a better one now though. While at Hoosier Body in Ft. Wayne, they gave me an air-driven sander tool with a circular rubber? wheel with "flaps" (for lack of a better word). Buzzed off decals on doors of the used truck in about a half-hour or less. On a used white truck it left some red residue, but the wheel was old. Most residue came off with Goo-Gone. I would be a little careful of the finish- but would have no qualms on the box at all.

The best way to remove vinyl lettering is with heat but heat guns are not the best way.
We own and operate a vinyl lettering removal business here in Jacksonville Florida we recently did a 100 53 foot trailer job with 4 people in two weeks.Dont get gouged by a sign shop
Steam is the only way to go when removing this stuff 238 degrees of wet steam.. it will peel that stuff right off and in most cases take the glue with it and never harm the paint like air erasers or heat guns and the best thing of all is its quiet! so you can listen to the radio.
You can sit there til you fall asleep on your ladder with goo be gone for any excess glue or you can use something a lot cheaper and tons easier you can also use this method if someone else removed lettering and the glue has been baked on and has dirt in it etc.
Get a white rag..not colored and a gas can...wear rubber or mechanics gloves and soak the end of the rag with gasoline DO NOT SMOKE while doing this.The problem with decal remover is that it has acetone in it which has nothing to prevent evaporation other than the gel.. if its windy you've wasted the 15.00 a can or whatever
gently rub the areas that have the glue remaining and it will vanish with little or no effort, we use a small bristle brush like a dish brush etc and then use your rag to clean it up...its the gas vapors that take off the glue. we then wash our vehicles and buff them out with a cleaner wax like mequires
Sign companies will tell you every time that they use citrus remover @ 50.00 a gallon but I would bet that they use our method every time, I learned this from the competition we can completely strip a 53 foot semi on all sides in about 2 hours depending on the quality of the vinyl( the cheaper the grade the harder it is to remove)
Anyone interested in having their lettering removed should call us we usually charge less than 250.00 for a straight truck (3 sides) and have 16 years exp and not once have we caused any paint problems
You can get your own steam source by purchasing a Wagner wall paper steamer at Lowes..its 45.00 and lasts years...use just the hose that comes with it not the plate anyone that needs further instruction can email us at:

I have to tell you that I have used all the methods above as I have been with three companies and had to remove signage from my trucks each time. All of it is work. The last one I did I simply drove to Freightliner and asked them if they could help. Yep! $95.00 and it was done and clean as a whistle. It don't get no better than that. He actually cleaned the residue from the other I had done in the past. Best $95.00 ever spent
