Panther Cargo Van Pay?

Can someone tell me what the base rate for cargo vans is?
An average fuel surcharge would be interesting too. Last year I averaged a little over .20 in a straight truck fuel surcharge.

.20 cents per mile is my minimum in a cargo van UNLESS it is time to go home, then I MAY consider an adjustment.

You should be able to average that number.

I think the Panther ad says .77 cents per mile.

My FSC year to date at Panther is 17.65 cents per mile. The fuel cost in this Sprinter is about 13.5 cents per mile at $3 a gallon.

Since the FSC is supposed to help defray the cost of fuel, not pay for all of it, there are very few absolutes with my van. In other words, I'm not very likely to turn down a 700 mile run that only pays an eleven cent FSC, especially if it delivers to an area which I know I'll get another load out of. Nor will I accept a 300 mile run with a .40 FSC if it means I'll have to turn right around and deadhead 300 miles right back to where I was for the next load.

I am of the belief that saying no to sub-standard FSC's sends a message to the person bidding the loads.

Obviously, a smaller carrier may get the load, but in the long run, the poor service, or lack of service, provided by cut-rate carriers will allow the business to return to the top carriers along with equitable FSC's attached to the offers.

That is a strong statement bashing small carriers. Do you have any statistics to back that up or is that just your opinion?

The "long run" has long ago come and gone, and people aren't calling up and hanging on HOLD waiting to book their freight with high-priced carriers. For really hot shipments, all things being equal, the closest truck or the first to get there will get the load. All other things being equal, the lower priced carrier usually gets it, be it a small or a large carrier.

i agree with the long load....i consider a long load anything over 800 miles..i have not seen one of those in over 6 months...however i have seen some outrageous prices charged for short loads, recently i left a shipper with just part of the load..drove 115 miles, and got a call from carrier to go back and get the rest, it added 230 miles to my load at full rate cause shipper made the mistake...however even though i got paid the additional 230 miles our carrier charged them 1700.00 thats right 1700.00 for the turn around plus the cost of the actual load...now there was 4 other vans sitting around there doing nothing....it woulda been cheaper to get one of them to go and pick it up. and deliver it to the destination which was 265 miles away..its a huge national acct where i picked up from..and shipper was not happy with the carrier buy all means...so when your carrier gives ya a dead end load get all you can.. if they say we dont have enough worked into this load to give ya a bonus there not telling the truth.. turn it down

Hello Turtle,
In your response to whitey1 you state, "My FSC year to date at Panther is 17.65 cents per mile. The fuel cost in this Sprinter is about 13.5 cents per mile at $3 a gallon." I probably am not calculating these numbers correctly (meaning I don't understand or just plain cannot do math). I'm figuring $3.00/gal. divided by .135 dollars/mile equals 22.22 mpg. Doesn't this mean Panther pays you $.1765 x 22.22, or $3.92 per gallon? Wouldn't that more than offset
the price of fuel? What have I misunderstood?
Thanks for any help. TomTrucker
