The Galileo spacecraft and its Inertial Upper Stage booster rocket were deployed from the space shuttle Atlantis October 18, 1989. Shortly thereafter, the booster rocket fired and separated, sending Galileo on its six-year journey to the planet Jupiter.

My co-driver and myself arrived the gate to the Space Center, to be told today was launch day, (it had been delayed from yesterday), and we were denied entry .... unless .. our names were on the list.

I told the guard he had better check because were carrying components for the space station and needed to be at the assembly building.

On check he discovered we were indeed on the entry list, and a pass was issued.

We unloaded and asked for permission to remain at the assembly building for launch. We were told the view would be much better from Titusville, I told them we had seen it from there, may we stay here?

We were given permission .... and while the view was sorta straight up, the SOUND was crazy! My innards were shaken loose .....

Was a good day for us

Glad you got to be out there for one.
We moved to Titusville in 1960. My Dad worked as a boiler mechanic at the space center until 1985. I used to park cars in our front yard for $1 so people could walk the 300 feet down to the Indian River and watch the Saturn and Apollo launches.
It's a shame that the space program is pretty much being shut down this year.
