No Computers in North Carolina?

Don't they use computers in North Carolina? I got a ticket in 1992 in North Carolina for riding a motorcycle without a helmet. I guess I never paid the ticket, because when I went to get my CDL B the Michigan DMV told me that when they ran my DMV Report it came back that I was not eligible for a CDL because my license in N.C. had been suspended. This is strange because I never had a N.C. License. When I contacted them, they told me I had to pay the fine, which I did. I went back to Michigan's DMV and it was still on the system and I was not elegible. I contacted Raleigh N.C. again and now they tell me I have to pay the State another $50 before they will clear my report and it will take up to 8 weeks. I have a job lined up driving a straight Truck for an O/O, and he will not hold this job for 8 more weeks waiting for this crap to get cleared up.
Have any of you ever heard of anything so stupid? Don't they use computers in N.C. or are their's so slow that it takes 8 weeks to transmit the info from one dept. to the other? It appears that I have no recourse but to go along with it. I sent the $50 and now I am sitting on my A_ _ waiting and enjoying EO on a daily basis. Wish me luck.

Being a retired trooper from SC (not NC) let me first say that I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for someone who didn't pay a ticket from 12 years ago but.............

When the federal CDL law took effect in the early 90's all DMV systems were hooked together so a driver would have a harder time getting 5 DL's in 5 states. Now when you go to get your DL renewed your home state will check your record in all states. when you didn't pay the ticket NC gave you a "non-licensed driver number." (You actually have a DL # in NC now even though you never had a real NC DL) They give you this number and then suspend the number so if you ever get stopped in NC again and the officer runs your name and DOB in the NC system you'll come back suspended.

Long story short, everything you said makes perfect sense to me and as far as the 8 weeks go......welcome to the world of state Govt. Again, nothing personal but it took you 12 years to pay the ticket so can you really get angry if it takes them 2 months to do their part? :)

I agree it was my fault that the ticket wasn't paid, but in all honesty I thought I had taken care of it. I know it sounds stupid and maybe it was but WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES. I really have no choice but to wait it out and then get down to business when everything is taken care of. I do appreciate your honest opinion and replying to my post. Maybe we will run into each other on the road somewhere, someday.(Not literally)

kswish,
Got your e-mail. Appreciate you looking for my input. Funny to say, I can relate to the incident. It happened to me about 8 yrs ago, when I had to renew my license in Ohio. Found out I had a unpaid speeding ticket in PA. Just like you, completely forgot about it or thought I paid it and didn't find out til it came time for renewal. Fortunately, I was able to get in touch with someone in PA and Columbus, OH who seemed to have some sympathy for me and was able to expedite the fine and suspension. I was able to fedex the money order to pay with a self addressed and prepaid fedex envelop to PA and they sent the release letter to Columbus. The whole process took about a week. That was the good part. The bad part was by then, my license expired and I had to take a new written test and driving test to get reinstated. Lot's of fun that was. Advice- call NC and be extremely polite and ask if there is anything you can do to get MI what they need. Find out from MI what they are expecting from NC and cross your fingers.

Good Luck,

Sorry about the long winded story
