Need Satellite Dish Help

Recently we had Direct TV installed in our house. I wanted to be able to use satellite TV in our truck when we are stuck somewhere so I got an extra dish and receiver to take on the truck.(Yes, they are registered with the company) I have never set up a dish on the road so I thought maybe someone out there could help. I do know enough to supply the zip code where I am and that supplies me with the info I need to aim the dish. I have a compass so I can figure the direction pretty close but can you tell me the difference between "elevation" and "rotation"? I only come up with two things I can adjust. Am I missing something? Also, on the dish connection ( the arm, I don't know the proper name) there are two places to screw a cable into. What is the second one for??..And hey, before you tell be to check my directions which were in the box..you guessed it.. I'm out on the road and I left it at home. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. .... Well, the phone just rang and we're gonna get out of here with that next load.. Thanks..

Try going to Winguard industries and see if they can help you need to know elevation and direction. Does your unit use a alignment indicator on your TV screen? Basically your aiming to the southwest where the satelite is located and with out knowing precisely where you are your doing the needle in the haystack thing! Sorry about that. The other thing is if your card is not registered for mobile use it won't work anyway. Did you register with direct tv for your model and serial number in the truck or did you just slip[ the card out at the house? I know I'm not helping much, but if you could locate a Camping World or Satelite repair facility they may be able to help? Good luck.

I was at a small TV speciality store yesterday, and they were selling a small handheld unit - about the size of a wallet - that was called a satellite locator. Not sure exactly how it works, but it was designed for RV satellite users to aim their dish in the proper direction. Sorry - I did not notice the price. Might want to check ebay. I think thats the place a person has the best chance of finding uncommon items. Good luck, and please let me know how it works out for you. I have been thinking about the same type of arrangement with DirecTV. Have you asked about using the DirecTV internet service through the dish?

If you aim for nothing, you are sure to hit it.

I just did a quick ebay search for satellite locator. There are 15 items available now, and they range from $15 to $90. If they are this common, I am sure Radio Shack or Best Buy, Circuit City, etc would sell the same thing.

Winegard does sell indicators ect. We have one and they work well. In addition, Glen is right in that you can't move the card from receiver to receiver. You can take your home receiver and put it in your truck. One of our relatives takes his receiver out of the house and into an RV when they go to Atlanta for races.
