Makes Sense Now

I had always wondering why there is an open cesspool in the middle of the compound where my son is stationed in Afghanistan. It made no sense, the U.S. Army had better sanitary conditions than that 50 years ago.

I talked to him today and found out why, he is not on a U.S. controlled base, it is a base that is under NATO command. The commander is Canadian. (sorry, just a fact, not meaning to pick on Canadians)

The U.S. Army should never be deployed to fight without being under total control of U.S. commanders. Also, since the U.S. provides the majority of the NATO Troop and the majority of the funding, we should be in ultimate control.

There is no valid excuse that our government can make for forcing our troops to live under such conditions. Hear that Mr. Commander in Chief? Hear that Mr. Gates? I think it is just about time you wake up and do your jobs right!!!

it's pure politics Joe...the US doesn't want to lose their western allies...so they spread the work around to make them feel better...just as the Brits have control in other sectors...as much as you may not like it our allies are losing troops as well...so the misery is spread around...

your saying an American life is worth more then any other allie? I can't believe that....

What I am saying is that no American commander would allow or force his troops to live next to a open pool of chit. If NATO commanders are no better than that they should get out of the military.

Obama should never allow troops that he commands to live under those conditions. If that is all the respect he has for the troops he is in charge of he should join those NATO guys who need to go.

I don't give a rats patute about the politics, that is my son. Why would a Canadian want to live like that?

By the way, they are at a "fixed" base, not a mobile fire base. There is no valid excuse.

Because it is a war? and chit happens....no one promised them a rose garden...it may not be preferable but that is the way it is...maybe there is some reasons your son is not privy to? As you say a lot goes on behind the scenes in these cases...maybe it is not as permanent as he is lead to believe...maybe, maybe, maybe.....

No, OVM, there is no valid excuse!! That base has been there for more than 6 years. It is not in the field. Building working latrines is not a new skill. Building a working system at a fixed base is even easier. Porta Pottys would be more sanitary.

I also find it amazing that so many of our reporters for our wonderful news outlets have been there, and said nothing. I talked with my dad, WWII combat vet, they did not have to put up with that for more than a day our two when they moved into a new area. They knew how to take care of things way back then.

You would if it were your son. By the way, he is stationed on the civilian airport at Kandahar, not out in the boonies. There is just no valid excuse.

There are a lot of valid and substantial reasons why we need to withdraw from NATO now. Our resources are wasted with them and NATO's purpose was not to fight on outside of Europe but it has been expanded to something not defined by anyone but the EU. It's charter was written specific to the Soviet threat and it is now outlived it's usefulness - especially with the Berlin Agreement PLUS and the use of NATO (including US troops) under the control of the EU for operations that the EU sees fit to use NATO. It has turned into an EU fighting force, primary funded by the US.

LOL!! That is exactly what my son said when that cesspool was
hit by rocket fire!!! He said the stench was unreal when that mess got stirred up!! He also said that he was happy that it was that chit that got hit and not some of the more important chit in the compound, like him and his buddies. He had much less concern for the taliban dudes they had locked up in the brig.
