Alex Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh at the time of America's birth, wrote a warning to America in 1787. He observed that the average age of the world's greatest civilizations was about 200 years, during which they inevitably progressed through the following sequence:
* from bondage to faith,
* from faith to courage,
* from courage to liberty,
* from liberty to abundance,
* from abundance to complacency,
* from complacency to apathy,
* from apathy to dependence, and
* from dependence back to bondage.
Maybe this should be in the political forum, but everyone's woes about the trucking industry, including the Mexicans, fuel prices, rates, laws, etc, can be traced back to a warning given 220 years ago.
Most of what I've heard points to us being in the 'dependence' phase. I may be wrong, but I would say the complacency, apathy, and dependence have all been happening since the 60-70s. IMO, the illegal immigrant situation, NAFTA, free trade with China, are all speeding the trend toward bondage. Our representatives have gotten past the point where our opinions matter. Religion taken out of the schools (unless you're Muslim) adds to it. The breakdown of the family unit and demise of the idea of personal responsibility tops it off.
The only way I see out of this is a revolution. And that's where compacency beats that. The new generation has no idea what "fighting for something" entails. To them, it's carrying signs and singing Kumbaya. Then again... the ones who do that now already want socialism. They have no idea the web they weave.
I'll see you in about 30 years wearing the socialist chains. I'll be sipping mai tais in Belize by then. Until then, if someone wants to start a revolt, hand me an M-16.
