Landstar and Qualcomm

A while ago (a year maybe?) Landstar went to using Qualcomm. Out of simple curiosity, I'd love to hear from LEA BCOs (Landstar Express America's name for owner/operators) what changes, if any, they've noticed since Qulcomm came into use. A Landstar recruiter once told me that Qualcomm would reduce (but not eliminate) the importance of grooming personal agent relationships and reduce (but not eliminate) the need to surf the Landstar board for loads. My question of LEA BCOs is, did that happen? And, What other changes if any occured after Qualcomm was introduced?

I ask this out of simple curiosity. My wife and I are very happy with and have no plans to leave our present carrier.

Its been about 2yrs when they switched from Highway Disaster to Qualcomm. The switch came just before I signed on with them so I can't comment on the differences. I do know that we receive some load offers off of the Q, but most of the time the agents call us with load offers. We don't have to call them nor do we need to look up loads.

It looks like Landstar is making some good money from it's BCO's with Qualcom. I would think that there has to be a more cost effective (read:Cheaper) way of keeping track of truck location.

Nations Express operates primarily like Landstar. Agents in different locales.

They operate with Peoplenet; "a qualcomm wannabe", which is at best, an inefficient email handler. You seldom ever get a reply from questions, or queries.

But obviously one thing it DOES DO well is track your location, and believe me that's all its good for.

It is a total wasted resource for the contractor. Basically the "bottom line" is that the contracter's are paying for Nations Express's tracking service. x( x( x( x(

Here's a wild idea... take the cell phone off the belt and call in with a position report. No call means everything is ok and delivery will be on time. Call means whatever the call addresses. After delivery call in with location where waiting on the next dispatch. Much cheaper for cell phone minutes than outrageously overpriced QC. Then again, that takes away $10-15 monthly added profit per truck from the carrier since that's how much they are overcharging us for a QC.

The other option would be Nextel which offers GPS functions.

I just saw a full page add in Heavy Duty trucking magazine that has Verizon offering GPS tracking and communications through their cell phones. FEDEX CC has been testing this for some time with a few contractors that have a GPS enabled phone.

Nextel has the same tracking feature also. Only problem is, if your cellphone is on your belt, you may not be tracked as well as if it where laying on the dash.
