I don't see any reason why you can't go for loads on your own. You have your insurance and DOT authority. Just make sure that the company you are dealing with privately knows that it's you and not the company that you are leased to. You will probably need some type of generic bill of lading filled out with your name and address. Also you will have to collect money on your own.

Try contacting Landstar at 1-800-435-4373 and ask for there brokerage department and see if you could get on with them as a broker with your contacts for back hauls. It's worth a call. Good luck!

Same situation. Sold profitable tire business because of "honest" employees stealing us blind.

My husband and I want to be together...work time and leisure. He stayed on the rd. years ago hauling produce, going west, back east, over and over...non stop, Then the tire business began. Enjoyed it tremondously, operated ourselves, loved every customer, but it grew so rapid, employees became a necessity. We could not operate alone anymore, and after hiring on employees there was never a break. Couldn't go to bank (or the bathroom) without one (or all) grabbing over $500-$1000 a day. No answer to end this. It can cause a man to go broke in a hurry. We closed before that happened but with many regrets, we miss our customers who we served for almost 14 yrs.

Trucking was our next career decision but boy has it changed. Changes over the years, i.e., price of fuel for one, company we leased on with demands their tracking devise in "our" truck, and we have to ""pay them $108.00/mo. so they can track us, our driving time"" know location at all times, and who knows what else! The average speed, per their calculations,is compared with driving speed and is expected to be kept @ 50 mph. No Way. Average speed is 70 mph in most places.

Just received message fr. our wonderful employee. DOT is soon to enforce... info from logbooks, payroll information, toll receipts, receipts if stop to eat or anything else you could possibly imagine. Per Co., this info. is to enable DOT the ability to compare these records with others. This requirement is personal, and should not be shared with DOT or anyone else. DOT's only concerns should be in the truckers log book only.

We receive a pick-up, never denied any, deliver (usually early) or on the time schedule, PROBLEM: ALL trips have been deadheads back. We expected this occcasionally, but not worth the trips every single time. We have our own truck and cannot(per employee rules)t grab a load back on our on. We are still incorporated from previous business, have everthing needed to go out on our own.... EXCEPT advise...."Where do we start? How do we find deliveries to expedite? I know there is some way we can do this on our own, without all of the demands involved w/leasing out to another company (who are getting most of the money we make for the haul, encluding also the money deducted fr. P/R for that stupid tracking device we have to pay them monthly to have in OUR truck for their use, charges for direct deposits($3.00), insurance coverage (should anything happen, insurance does not cover one iota _____thing if truck is empty while picking-up or deadheading back) This is in the small print.

All we need is any knowledge and advise from experienced drivers, or owner/operators, and a LOT of prayers!! Thanks to all of you for the information you have provided on this site... It really feels good to know there are a few good, caring people left in this world!
(and they seem to all be truck drivers)!!!

Travel Safe!!:)

DOT using toll receipts and fuel receipts to check log books is nothing new . They've been doing it for years . My carrier requires copies of fuel receipts with logs . ( I'm under 26,000 gvw and pay for fuel so they wouldn't need receipts otherwise.)Deadhead every load sounds unreasonable and I doubt your carrier would allow you to find your own backhauls anyway with their name on your truck . Do you have your own insurance ( primary liability and cargo ) and an mc number ? You should really try to attend MATS . There will be a wealth of info there .

If your not sure you want to do it alone. Shop around, either at the truck show or the list of compaines listed on this site. There are TONS of companies out there. You do not have to be with the one you are with. The qualcomm (tracking) is something you are going to run in to with all good companies. It's needed for many reasons and can be used to protect you. (someone calls in a complain from IN but your in IA at the time) A lot of cusomters demand it so they know in realtime where their item is. DOT log violations can be fought with qualcomm records (unless your guilty ;) ) however, I understand your aprehentions about them.

Keep an eye out when looking over the companies, call recuiting. I called 10 compaines before I changed. My new company has a backhaul department. If they come up empty handed you are allowed to find your own loads and they handle billing unless they have had trouble with the shipper before (and if so, why would you want to haul for them again?)

Going out on your own can be great :) However, getting people to pay you can be problems.

Unless you are very experienced dealing with brokers only, I would go to a company that allows you to do both. Panther would be your best bet in that regard. They help you find some of the brokers in addition to handling the collections. They charge 15 percent of the brokered run gross for this service. (for brokered loads only)
A great service and well worth the 15 percent. Most brokers would have you wait weeks before you see your money. And that is the ones that pay you. You will have all kinds of fun chasing money down if you go it alone. Once again, I would recommend Panther for what you are looking to do.
