I'm taking everyone's advise about load selection.

I will definantly be taking everyone's advise on how to avoid being sent to slow-service areas. I have always been one of those people that have to learn everything the hard way, this has been no exception! I will admit it will be a little hard to refuse loads at first. Most of the loads that do take us out west come with a lot of miles, but we now know to look at the bigger picture. Do we want to travel 1600 miles than sit the rest of the week or stay in the primary service area and be consistantly moving. If I am away from home I would rather stay as busy as possible, plus it seems that we spend more money sitting than under a load!

Thanks Again

If you go into many of the western states, I would advise you to learn how to obtain your own freight. As you have learned, you wind up sitting more out there if you are waiting just for an expedite load. The alternative is not to go to those locations.

Yeah, we did do a backhaul a couple of weeks ago from KS to CA. It paid o.k. and our truck owner agreed to take less of a cut because we wouldn't get any fuel surcharge. We have been on getloaded.com and checking the boards at the truck stop. Keep your fingers crossed, Im begining to hate Utah.}>

I learned something this week that may help you--- I delivered to Denver at the lowest pay rate, which is the farthest west I've gone as an expediter. When he gave me the load my dispatcher said that if my company didn't find me a load out of there the same day he would give me $200 to cover the deadhead back to St. Louis. I didn't ask him to do that, and didn't even know that my company would do that. If your company sends you to a bad place again at a low rate, ask if they'll give you any money to cover the deadhead back east.
