RE: I saw a neat sign
You Said;â€May be true, but what flavor of Christian??? “
Well it wasn’t the Jesus loves you, he’s your friend type. That didn’t come into existence for another 80 years after the founding.
You Said;â€That's something else entirely that I seriously don't get, how can there be so many "versions" of Christianity??? “
I have a chart somewhere that explains all the different branches of Christianity, BIG CHART but it all boils down to the Roman catholic/Orthodox religion and the Edict of Milan – yes people that it s root of all Christian religions. There are a large number of other Christian religions during that time but those were the largest if I remember right. A Large and Complicated story to be saved for another time.
OH got to tell you, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all Abrahamic religions. They all have common threads throughout the religions.
You Said;â€So then, if our country was founded based upon Christian values, and we are at war with another country whose country is founded on Islamic values, could this be considered a "holy war being waged **by** the US?"â€
Well I see your point but truthfully the word ‘by’ should be changed. First if we were fighting a true holy war, we would not leave any prisoners, all would be killed. Second if we were fighting a holy war, we would not make our troops go through sensitivity training. Third if we were fighting a holy war we would never follow any treaties or conventions but fight to defeat, not be defeated.
We went to fight a war against terrorism, which is being fought by Islamic extremist and in part by other religions – albeit a very small amount is none Muslim. What the problem is with the premise that we are immoral because we are fighting a war like this is the fact that we didn’t start it, we were attacked and we responded. Just to add to this, we also went to war with Japan, who for all intent and purpose treated their emperor as a god, the country was based on the premise that he was a deity and his laws were passed down from the heavens to be followed blindly.
You Said;â€And then, isn't a war based on religion completely the opposite of what the founding fathers, who wanted 'freedom of religion' in the first place, against our constitution?â€
Not exactly. Freedom of religion was only for the citizens of this country, nothing less and nothing more. There was a strong attitude that someone off the boat was still a foreigner and treated as such. Today we extended out constitution to cover people who are not even on our shores and treat people who have made it clear that they will kill you or me as if they are our equals.
But here is something else. The bill of rights was an after thought and the assumption that we understood the freedoms and openly respected everyone’s rights was a great concern with the constitutional authors. The funny thing is that our country was not as tolerant then, with an anti-Semitic attitude throughout the states, Catholics being limited to different stations (lower) in life and so on, the idea that we had a perfect country here seems to be something that has been changed to fit into the PC world we live in today.
