Well I think OVM misses an important point - if you are a foreign national, the US government won't issue you a US passport IN THE FIRST PLACE.

AND with your green card, your information is in the system and they can look you up the same as a passport so that is your passport.

BUT what they don't tell you is that unlike me who has a passport, for the green card holder they can actually refuse entry into the US for a number of reasons, which they don't have to tell you what they are. If you are caught doing something wrong or carrying something you shouldn't (like Canadian beef sticks), you can lose that green card and HAVE to go through an adjudication process to get it back - let alone get back into the US.

I wonder if people know that they have to present that green card instead of their passport?

I find it much easier crossing on both sides (less questions asked) now that I have a FAST card. And no bulky passport to carry.

Greg..I have a PR card which piggybacks a green card...not just a stand alone green card which is different again....

PR...Permanent Resident Card

GC/PR - the same thing to a citizen because we don't need it nor want one.

The point is this - those can be taken away if you screw up at the US border. Where mine can not be taken away unless a court takes it during a bail hearing or something really really stupid, like if I have back child support payments.

I understand..my card can be revoked just because...

Yep, so I don't see what your point is with the original post.

I mean you are in the system, the GC is essentially a passport in a different form but with some responsibility attached to it to be a good boy or else we take the card away and we kick you out.

I just thought it ironic with all the hype that Americans need a passport to get home and here a non citizen that only has a PR can get back without one...I don't even need my Canada Passport...

I know that, it was easy to figure out but the sad thing is we allow people to set the rules for ourselves to protect the country and then because the tourist industry cries about it, they create all kinds of alternatives which means nothing at all because they still ask you the same questions. Having a passport to get back into the country from Canada is a bit ridiculous but Mexico and all the other countries we should be using a passport.
