Is distorted and only shows a portion of the picture when i upload it?

Depends on what image you are talking about. Avatars need to be a maximum of 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB, whichever is smaller. Other images, depending on what they are are where and how they are uploaded, have their own dimensions and filesizes.
