Yea he is taking the signals from the dems, who are using the class warfare cr*p to stir up emotions to get elected.

It sounds good and all that but the word Temporary should be removed and he should be talking about no fuel tax at all.

He has said today that he thinks that replacing the tax system would be good, going to a flat tax but that is replacing one problem with another.

Fair Tax If you really want a real tax replacement.

Unsure about the Fair Tax - read this

BUT................isn't he the only one of the three that is suggesting ANYTHING to do with fuel (our largest problem) and calling for SOMETHING to be done about the current tax program? What I'm hearing from the other side is a lot of 'nice give-away' programs that can only RAISE my taxes!

Among other proposals, McCain said he would:
–Raise the tax exemption for each dependent child from $3,500 to $7,000.
–Require more affluent people — couples making more than $160,000 — enrolled in Medicare to pay a higher premium for their prescription drugs than less-wealthy people.
–Offer people the option of choosing a simpler tax system with two tax rates and a standard deduction instead of sticking with the current system.
–Suspend for one year all increases in discretionary spending for agencies other than those that cover the military and veterans while launching an expansive review of the effectiveness of federal program.

Raise the tax exemption for each dependent child from $3,500 to $7,000.

Honestly the best way to help a family is not to tax them at all. But see here is the problem, maybe you are not aware of this, how many families actually make money off of the present tax system? You know what I am talking about? Well if you don’t, it seems a lot of people make money by staying in a situation where they get tax credits and exemptions because the government adjusts poverty indicators among a few others. This really costs the people who put into the system a lot of money.

Require more affluent people — couples making more than $160,000 — enrolled in Medicare to pay a higher premium for their prescription drugs than less-wealthy people.

Why? The system should exclude anyone making over 125K and there needs to be an elimination of forcing people to take Social Security and Medicare when they can insure themselves. There already has been a court case that the outcome says we are not entitled to the money we put into the system, so I say let's start ramping it down to eliminate it in say 2040 or somewhere around that time. Social Security is a failure, it needs to be gone but by phasing it out. This is a government problem – specifically with the congress who has allowed the insurance companies to dictate what Medicare does.

Offer people the option of choosing a simpler tax system with two tax rates and a standard deduction instead of sticking with the current system.

Read the Fair Tax book, get an understanding that anything that has deductions, withholding or any tier system is bad. Learn how the money that is taken out of the system in the form of withholding hurts us. Learn how the system works and how other countries have approached things to correct the inherently twisted punitive and damaging tax system that they had (it was a copy of our own system).

Suspend for one year all increases in discretionary spending for agencies other than those that cover the military and veterans while launching an expansive review of the effectiveness of federal program.

Been there, done that under Clinton – called rebuilding government, didn’t get very far. ALGORE was supposed to be in charge of that pet project but he lost interest in it when the forklift ran out of propane then he figured out that propane is bad.

The problem is McCain has been a four term senator and has done really nothing. He has given us McCain-Feingold which for the most part was a reform act and a disaster but here is a guy who sits in a senior seat and could make good use of it but hasn’t.

Again about taxes, he is not doing anything at all; he is talking about reducing the corporate tax from 35% to 25% and throwing things in like the concern for the CEO pay. Go to the senate and create a bill with your ideas McCain!

He talks about the Department of Education and how it has to work with governors of the states, but it would be better to make a promise to eliminate the DoE completely and let the states and local level of government take over things. You do know that since the DoE’s creation, our school standards have been reduced to the point that graduates of high school have an equivalent education of a 7th grader? How are we suppose to compete on a world level when a kid from India has a doctorate and working at Burger King next tom someone who thinks India is near Hawaii?

He also mentions the high cost of college, but offers no real solution. The real solution is not to find ways to help the student pay for college but stop subsidizing the places that continue to raise tuition and force them to stop making profits. You know U of M makes a few billion off of our taxes, it is a public school with a charter that says that it is to be open to all citizens of the state but I don’t qualify to go there or afford to.

Read the speech.

The real issue for me is this, if he is concern about the gas taxes, then get off the campaign trail, go to Washington, introduce legislation to suspend the taxes and reduce them after the suspension is over with, and MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT. This would make him in the spot light for at least two days and leave Obama and Hillary scrambling to find a way to show him up.

Remember that these guys are senators, not governors; they already hold a lot of power and does nothing so the real solution is term limits and the people need to get involved by looking at the record of the person, not their rhetoric.

I understand all that you're saying but sheesh it is a starting point, one that I'm not hearing from the other side, Rome wasn't built in a day.

True enough but there could be a problem with the timing and the press coverage seeing how the Pope is visiting this week.

I don't have any answers and I'm smart enough to know that you don't either, none that would work overnight anyway. What are you gonna do Greg, wait until someone comes along that agrees with you entirely??

I won't enter into a debate with you on politics, I have not the patience or more importantly the memory (retainability if you will) to do that. I was merely stating that I was very excited to see ANYONE make mention of ANYTHING that would bring relief (no matter how small) to not only the trucking industry but also to my children who are also suffering from high gas prices.

I too am glad to see fuel prices even being mentioned. Nothing may be done about it, but if it is not even being talked about then I am sure nothing will happen.

I thought we got some pretty good press the past couple of weeks with the so-called strike, the dump trucks 'marching' on DC and all, that alone is a huge thing for us, 'the forgotten'.

Totally agree, the thing is the article only touched on a couple issues, I put in more issues that were part of the speech.

Nope not at all, I can't see anyone agreeing with me on everything. My frustration is knowing that there are better people out there in both parties and seeing them shoved aside for these three. We don't need to elect a president on being a hero, or being half black or being a women - that will sink the country. We really need to elect a leader and McCain is the closest one of the three... which really does not say much.

Here is a bit of news for you OVM - talking about farms...

Today they announced that the administration will be giving $200M to some countries to help ease the high food prices.

So it is interesting that;

1 - that even though there is a lot of corn being used, the by product of processing seems to be feed.

2 - the press is pointing to Haiti as a good example of what we have done with our greed and selfishness using food for fuel but the fact that Haiti has been very unstable for a long time

3 - if we took that $200M and the $1.8B that they are spending on home owner education and the $16B on giving large home builders tax breaks and allowing them to adjust their taxes three years past and several years forward, we could actually put farmers on the land to produce more food and more crops that would ease the problem.

4 - that in Washington, there really is no one who cares or understands the real issues. They see the home mortgage losses as a problem not for the home owner but the cites and states who now have to adjust the tax rate and the stock market, but they forgot about the Dollar and the need to keep it strong.

It don't matter who is running, they are all wrong for the country, the question comes down to who will do the least amount of damage to the country.

If you ask me what they need to do is take some of the money they are wasting and use it to construct some new refineries. Even if it's through grants. I mean the problem with the supply isn't the amount of crude as much as it is refining capacity. Then about the refineries in the Gulf Coast area that are still shut down from Katrina and Rita.
