Thanks for the link. If I am near there then I will try to attend one of the meetings. I honestly feel with everyone going with paperless logs in the future they can come up with some better rules of service then what we have. As a team driver I thought being able to do the 5 on 5 off under the old rules was a much better plan. Under that plan my co driver and i could drive from coast to coast without feeling like we both did it straight through ourselves. The 14 hour rule is the real killer and screws you up alot if you have a delay in getting loaded.

How would you change the HOS rules?

I would keep the 11 driving hours with a 16 hour limit not 14. I'd make split logging a 5 hour window. That allows the sensible 5/5 shifts for those teams who prefer that. It also allows a better margin for shipper/consignee delays plus time to get to a safe layover spot after unloading.

Why extend the 14 to 16 and leave the 10 hour rule in place? that confuses things even more.

The only two things they need to change is;

allowing the driver to stop the clock not with 5 and 5 but in two hour increments followed by a 10 hour reset - not 8 hours. This will allow teams the flexibility but also solos too.

The other is to revise the Electronic Logging regs, they are open for interpretation and don't follow the mandate from the congress about electronic signatures for interstate commerce.
