One thing for sure it is expensive to switch carriers. With that said, I find that most operating at that rate (1.12 per mile) or less consistently, are one breakdown away from something ugly.
This is where knowing your real cost to operate is so important.

very well put dave but sometimes you just dont have a choice when a majority of the trucks are running between 1100 -1500 now and your company is putting on 10-15 trucks a week doesnt leave many runs

That's the biggest problem with just about every company I know of, they add on too many trucks. Of course the management of said companies don't think so or worry about it because their paychecks are the same every week.

a lot of the trucks coming on are from a very large expediting firm with about 165 units....and they are forcing solo's into team units....they must have a fleet deal going on...a company that large you would think they know what they are doing....

While Express-1 hires on a lot of trucks every week, their turn-over rate is at 140% so that shouldn't be the issue.

FSC is .35 cpm for this week and I get 9 to 9.5mpg. I've been getting my fuel for around 4.50 a gallon so my cost is about .50 cpm at 9 mpg. I can make money IF I can get any miles. I have stayed in MI, IN, IL, OH, WI, KY area since the 4th and my best week was 672 miles. I have been a little creative with the logs but not gone overboard. Last week I managed to get 354 miles! Can you say "negative settlement"? The week before was 672. Fleet average for a solo D-unit is only 990. My best week teaming was only like 2800 miles. Fleet average for teams is 2010 miles.

I thing some of the company drivers are getting all the good miles by shuttling around Chicago all week. As for the $1.12 a mile; cheap freight off the internet is like 85% of our freight.
