Eaton-Fuller Super 10 Lightning Series for tractor

I have my truck and trailer for A. Blair. What a surprise when I got in and discovered it had a Super 10!!!! I've never used a Super 10.

The good news is that I figured it out and drove bobtail about 60 miles and with a trailer attached for 15 miles.

But, I float gears. I've been somewhat successful upshifting, but my downshifting sucks floating and double clutching.

Does anybody out there have any advice on the following:

1. When I shift 4th to 5th, the splitter is up for 4th. Do I float it into 5th then put the splitter down? Or do I flip it down as I'm shifting?

2. Same question 6th to 7th.

No question on 8th to 9th. The Lightning automatically shifts and downshifts 9 and 10 irregardless of what position the splitter is in.

3. When I downshift from 7th to 6th, the splitter is down. It needs to be up for 6th. When do I flip it up? Before I shift or as I'm shifting?

Right now the toughest thing is keeping track of what gear I'm in in. The position of the shifter is no longer the key to my gear. Now I have to know if my splitter is up which really makes me feel like a new driver in trucking school. Of course, my speed and rpm's are the best guide. But give me a break for now. Don't tell me how dumb I am because I'm not using the speed and rpm to keep me from grinding.

Thanks to anybody who has experience with this.

start in 2-3rd depending on weight, shift to 5th normally, button up after in 5th, shift to 6 and up with the button up. Now, we your in 10th you can put the button down and and shift to say 4th and skip down shifting, I never worried about it - let the jake do the work. And repeat.

I think you're confused about the Super 10. 3rd to 4th is just a flip of the splitter. 4th to 5th requires a shift and the splitter should be down. 5th and 6th don't require a shift. You just flip the splitter. But, 7th is a shift and the splitter has to be down or I will be shifting into 8th. 7th to 8th is just a flip of the button (splitter).

I'm trying to figure out what position the button(splitter) should be in as I'm doing an actual shift with the shift lever.

But thanks for the quick response.

In my truck I move the button back to low, and then move the stick when shifting up. Downshifting, I move the button to high as i move the stick at the same time.

Whoops, sorry bout that! I confused it with a straight 10. I think a super 10 goes 3 down, 4 up -shift- button down 5, button up 6th -shift- button down 7, button up 8th -shift- down 9th, up 10th. You have to push the clutch in between button pushes but down have to shift.

Thanks. I'll see if I can download it at this truckstop. My internet connection is T-Mobile here, so I don't have a good wi-fi like I would if I were at the FJ.

I appreciate the link.

one thing i am for sure on, when down shifting you can leave the button down and go 9-7-5-3-1

I always pre-selected the upshifts before moving the shifter. As soon as I went into a gear, I would move the splitter to position for the next gear, whether that involved moving the shifter or letting off the fuel.

As for downshifting, for whatever reason, I found it easier to drop 2 in the even gears, but it ground a lot more double down-shifting the odd gears. So I'd downshift 10-8-6-4, and into third if needed. I never, with any load we ever carried (probably max 55-60k gross weight), used first or second gears in the super 10. Maybe on higher grosses, or personal preference, you would.

So, one of you likes to downshift even gears and the other, odd gears. I'll have to try both methods.

Thank you so much for your help. I'm hoping I'll really like this transmission. It seems like it will be a lot easier to use once I've had some experience. The automatic 9th and 10th gear seem great.

I downloaded the brochure about using the transmission. I'm glad I saw that the automatic 9 and 10 only worked with the cruise control switched on. I usually keep it on all the time, and, I drive with cruise at every opportunity. Why should I have to maintain my speed when the truck wants to do it for me?

Thanks all.
