Ok...... i went into this experditing thing.... bk in Nov 2005.. being totaly new to this whole kinda thing.... learned a lot and stil learning..... and I do love the job.
I was getting paid.... 60% and all my bonus's and paying 40% for fuel... but also got part of it back... from them sur charge credit thingies...
then I hear from other drivers who do not have to pay the tolls or fuel.. and get around 33 or 35% of the truck gross.
soooooo someone help me here............ which is the better way to go when driving for a o/o or does it average out about the same as far as take home pay goes???
I am a solo driver... soon may be taking on a team driver.. with me of MY CHOICE ... but that won't happen for a lil while yet.
I am working for panther 2...
been thinking about applying with Fed X ...

RE: drivers paying for part fuel or not paying for

There have been a lot of threads on splits so the search function and working your way back through the posts should get you a lot of info. The most common system is 60/40 with the 60% side buying the fuel and getting all (100%) of the fuel surcharge money. The side not paying fuel gets 40% of the base run pay. Division of accessorial charges is up to the individuals. I believe the driver should get 100% of hand load/unload pay. Detention and layover should be split since both truck and driver are being held up. If tolls etc. are reimbursed that should go 100% to whichever side pays them.

Some of your question depends on the company and whether they pay a surcharge and at what average amount.
You can adjust these numbers accordingly to your situation.
On a 60/40 split with driver paying the fuel
$1.20 mile pay rate and .25 FSC
.60 percent rate is .72 per mile plus FSC of .25 =.97 per mile.
At 10 mpg and fuel at $3.00 per gallon that is .30 per mile
That leaves .67 cents per mile

At 40 percent and no fuel costs, you are at .48 cents.

The rest of the total calculation depends on how much deadheading and idling you are doing, or whether the truck has a generator. There are several things to look at when determining what is the best program.
Keep in mind I have not factored tolls or any kind of accessory pay.

RE: drivers paying for part fuel or not paying for

Well, Leo and DaveKc is Right on there post's. We pay our Driver's (Meaning a team)40% of the base on the load. We pay all the fuel, tolls, XFM, and Hotel's when we think that need a good break or if something goes wrong with the truck. Yes we Get 100% of the fuel surcharge, but Our driver's understand why.

We had a team that was in the Min Express and it was going to be a 3 day weekend so I called them and told them to go ahead and deadhead back home if they wanted too. They said Dave that's alot of fuel to be deadhead home. Yes it did cost $450.00 for them to deadhead home, but the fuel surcharge helps pay for that I told them. They was happy to be home with there wife's and kids for the hoildays.

These Driver's was more worried about me spending money on fuel than being home. I was blown away on them worring about me spending fuel.
I told them that in the long run we will make up for them deadheading home. I know Family time is important to driver's and it is to me and my wife. My father drove truck for over 35 years and I didn't get to see him that much when I was a kid, so I have a 2 week out rule with our driver's. I have deadheaded a team over 1500 miles so they can be home with there Family. I know it sounds Crazy at times but it works out in the long run.

RE: drivers paying for part fuel or not paying for

Hey M-star,
We have tried it 3 ways 67% of gross (including FS and accesorials)made good money even though we paid fuel and tolls. The 60% paying fuel and no tolls and a 25 cent rebate per gallon for a yet unamed scumbag (you know who you are) but that is another story. We currently run for the flat 40% total gross minus surcharge and it works "best for us" if for no other reason I detest paperwork and accounting. We believe the fleet owner is satisfied with our arrangement and we do as good if not better
than a lot of teams. We have been blessed in that we have worked for 2 of the finest fleet owners in the business and my best advice to you would be to research the person you will be working for. Stick with the adage business is business meaning set and define expectations and Get It In Writing.
As far as switching carriers we have not worked for Panther II, We started out w/Conway and did well after we learned the ropes. We run for
FECC now and I have to say they have been extremely good to us, again after we learned the ropes. We go to some of the coolest places and meet the greatest people and "Bonus" we are paid well to do it! Good luck!
Dave,
you send teams home every 2 weeks? Hell it takes 2 weeks for them to remember who I am and for me to get my groove back
