ScottandHelen: the first question you asked, "is a small company better?" is one that no one can answer except you. 'Better' means different things to different people, and if there were one company that was better for everyone, we'd all be driving for that company. The pay is also an individual thing - most all carriers pay within the same range, so the difference is how many miles you drive, how many of them are empty, where you live, how often you go home, even what you drive: in slow times, vans get less freight than straight trucks, for example.
You will have to find the answers that apply to your own situation, but the good news is that they're all here - it just takes looking. If you read as much of the fora as you can, especially the Newbie & Ask The Recruiter fora, you will find a wealth of useful info. You would also learn a lot by talking to as many drivers as you can, and if you can get to the MidAmerica Truck Show in March, in Louisville, there will be many recruiters there to talk to as well.
Good luck, and happy hunting, lol.:)

Your personality will dictate what company works best for you. Large or small.

Think how you want to be treated.

example 1: Are you a person that likes allot social connection like being known by your name, or being a truck number is okay with you.

example 2: Do you have the patience to sit and wait for a load offer that meets your profit expetations,or do you like to be moving all the time.

example 3: Do want to see all the country and Canada and stay out 3-5 weeks at a time, or do you prefer staying in a cetain part of the country and being home more often.

example 4: Do you want the Qualcom and the directions provided for you,or do you prefer to just use a phone and have a GPS or maps.

example 5: Do want to be part of a company that has strict policies and little flexability, or a company that has few rules but they change on the whim of a dispatcher or owner to make it fit their needs at the time.

What it comes down to know yourself and find the company large or small that fits you. Because you can not make enough money in this industry if you are miserable.
