ScottandHelen: the first question you asked, "is a small company better?" is one that no one can answer except you. 'Better' means different things to different people, and if there were one company that was better for everyone, we'd all be driving for that company. The pay is also an individual thing - most all carriers pay within the same range, so the difference is how many miles you drive, how many of them are empty, where you live, how often you go home, even what you drive: in slow times, vans get less freight than straight trucks, for example.
You will have to find the answers that apply to your own situation, but the good news is that they're all here - it just takes looking. If you read as much of the fora as you can, especially the Newbie & Ask The Recruiter fora, you will find a wealth of useful info. You would also learn a lot by talking to as many drivers as you can, and if you can get to the MidAmerica Truck Show in March, in Louisville, there will be many recruiters there to talk to as well.
Good luck, and happy hunting, lol.
