....military experience to run for office?
As I am very misrible today, I find myself being in a foul mood and offended by the article I read this morning; “Most '08 candidates lack military recordâ€, AP.
The premise that one has to have a military record to run for President is bothersome, and not really a good thing for all of us when you really think about it.
From my point of view, as skewed as it is, I feel that we have had presidents who have no military experience. Roosevelt was one, Clinton was another. One led us through the worst times this country has ever seen.
There is no guarantee that having a military record gives one an upper hand in leadership, especially when many of the people think that just because a person has reached a rank of Lieutenant or Captain means that they have leadership qualities. Actually many of my military mentors pointed out that these are the people who have the least capacity to be a leader and must grow into the position, it is the sergeants that were the true leaders and they would make good candidates.
Here are a few quotes;
“To some, like Richard Land, head of public policy for the Southern Baptist Convention, a war record still counts. "When you're a war hero, you have less to prove on the character front," he said, comparing McCain with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the front-runner in national popularity polls, who did not serve in the military.â€
AND
“And Vietnam veteran Audrey Birgstresser said presidents with military experience understand the sacrifices of deployed soldiers and how to deftly resolve conflicts.
"They know how to make decisions under pressure because that's what their life is all about," said Birgstresser, 59, of Harrisburg, Pa.â€
Sorry Mr. Land, McCain has no character; he has no real quality of leadership that has been proven beyond a doubt and to many of my generation we question his motives. Giuliani on the other hand has proven leadership qualities that we are looking for if you take Audrey Birgstresser comment at face value.
