I have never even thought about putting smiley faces or other things on my posts. To be honest, until today, I never even paid any attention to those icon do-hickeys below!! I guess I should be ashamed!! Layoutshooter

Yes you should layoutshooter! Ashamed! Ashamed I tell you! Those icon do-hickeys were put there for a reason, to be used! And you just ignored them like so much garbage! Shame, shame, shame! Now go sit in the corner and think about what you haven't done.
Hanging my head in shame, I have been all day. Want to know whats worse? I even tried to use them and can only get them to show up somewhere above the box I am working in. I am not good at these little computers and everyday program things. I learned computers on "Super" computers, like the "Cray" computers. They were 4X4X4 cubes, bathed in liquid nitrogen to keep them running. I sometimes had to wait weeks to get an hour or so on one. I still can't master the icon do-hickeys.

layoutshooter, it may be the way that your options are set up. If you have your message editor set to Simple text box then you won't see the selection of Smilies (icon do-hickeys) listed on the right hand side of your text box. There are 11 available that you can insert into your text just by clicking on them and they will appear wherever your cursor is located at the time.
To check your message editor settings, click on User CP, once in your control panel click on Edit Options (on the left hand side of the page under Settings and Options). Down at the bottom of the Edit Options page under Miscellaneous Options there is a drop down box where you can choose the type of message editor that you want to use. To see the smilies, choose either Standard Editor or Enhanced Interface.
Then when typing a post, to insert an icon do-hickey, just click on one of the little smilies that are on the right hand side of the box you type in.
The icons under the text box are to add an icon to your thread in the thread list, not for individual posts in a thread.

Layoutshooter, I'm glad we opened up a whole new way of posting on EO to you.
It's time for me to go to bed now and unfortunately our generator has decided to cause problems and stop running again, so we are idling again. Not only does it waste fuel, but with our truck, as long as the engine is running the headlights are on and there is no way to turn them off without turning off the ignition. What a pain and annoyance.
Anyway.. goodnight and have fun making the forums a bit more colorful!
