Cost Per Mile of $7.10

The Mars rover Curiosity just completed a 352-million-mile trip from Earth to Mars at a cost of $2.5 billion. That works out to a cost per mile of about $7.10.

With a cost per mile that high, the pay per mile is presumably higher so it was probably a good run. Even if you only cleared a penny per mile, your net would have been about $3.5 million.

Traffic would have been light and there would have been few scales to worry about. But good luck getting a run back! You'd probably end up doing local runs until the day you die. And long after you quit responding to dispatch, you'd still get messages:

Are you moving?

Are you moving?

Running late, please send 04....
