Thanks guys! Here's what happened......for several months I had fuel leaking under the engine on a cold start. At first it was happening only in cold weather. Once it got warm it stopped...for a while. Then it started leaking fuel at first start in warm weather. Otherwise the vehicle ran fine. I started looking into it seriously(?) about a month ago and discovered a post from Doctor A, Andy Bittenbinder in Pittsburgh. This is the post...Dr.A TECH ALERT-647 High Pumps - Sprinter-Forum, where he outlines a possible/probable cause and fix. So....I'm in Connecticut Monday, and the Sprinter goes into limp mode with check engine light on, but it resets itself upon a restart. The the vehicle started taking about a second longer to restart each time. Time to address this, I says. I know if I take it to a dealer, they're just going to want to replace the high pressure pump and I'm going to be out $1,500+ and never going to know what the cause was.

Here's the crazy part. I have been reading about Andy since I started expediting in 2010. So I got a wild hair and decided to drive to Pittsburgh from Connecticut, 525 miles from where I was,in hopes that I could get him to address the problem. I had never even spoken to him. I tried to call him to let him know I was coming, but unable to reach him that early in the morning, I took off toward Pittsburgh. Dumb as I am, I knew I was at risk at that point for a breakdown, but it was a quest to meet the mythical God of sprinters and request absolution for my misdeeds. And I was going. He returned my call when I was about 100 miles down the road. He laughed when I told him what I was doing, but he said "come on", but watch things closely as I was at risk at that point for an engine shutdown. Sure enough, I was 16 miles out from him when the engine shut down and poured fuel from the pump upon the turn of the key. I had the vehicle towed to his place. A key thing here, for me, is that he kept track of me all along the way to see how I was doing.

He showed up the next morning at one of his two shops, this one in Glenshaw, PA, with tools and one of his rebuilt pumps in case I had let it go too long and had damaged the seals, and went to work. What a guy! He took the pump off and, sure enough, all six screws securing the low pressure side of the pump to the high pressure side were loose. He tightened the screws with loctite, tested it for leaks, and praise Andy, it was fixed! We chatted the whole time, him giving me answers to questions about the Sprinter I've had for a long time and showing me what he was doing. I was in pig heaven. Finally, he did a scan of every system in the vehicle. He showed me the code indicating the limp mode I had experienced, which was related to the problem, and he showed me on the scanner what happened when the engine shut down. Plus a bunch of other things. He charged me two hours labor and a half hour for the scan.

I happen to really like my Sprinter. It was worth many times over the drive and engine failure to be able to meet this guy, talk with him, and watch him work. He does prefer appointments, and his dealing with me and my emergency was amazing. I love Andy. There, I said it.

How many miles are on your Sprinter? I was under the impression this is a problem related to high miles. I've never had such thing happen w/ 300k or less range.

2004 Freightliner 2500, 535,000 miles. Andy said that Mercedes contacted him, apparently before his forum post, and asked him to try and figure out why so many high pressure pumps were being replaced by the dealers. As we know, dealers are primarily focused on parts replacement, so whenever there was a fuel leak from the pump, they just replaced the pump, thank you very much, come again. And still do, I suspect. He explains in his Sprinter forum post, .Dr.A TECH ALERT-647 High Pumps - Sprinter-Forum, that the problem, in many cases is related to several things and is the place to look before replacing the pump. Worked for me in this case.
