cargo box flooring

Any thoughts on diamond plate the full length of the box? Wood seems to get abused by dock workers.

Wouldn't there be some concern with accidents occuring as a result of a full length diamond plate floor? I would think that diamond plate would, under some circumstances, be more slippery. While wood would absorb some oils that same oil would stay on diamond plate and would have to be cleaned regularly.

Don't have any experience with it, just a thought.

I hear your thought process. Been there and had the same thought. BAD IDEA!

It adds to the slip factor. Fork trucks will slide to front and left to right and either go through your box, or spin and not get out of some docks due to angel.

There was a thread I thought not too long ago on this or something simular.
We put diamond plate only part way into our box. I believe it is roughly 3 to 4 feet in. This seems to be the area that gets the most damage. Most loads are 2 to 4 skids so we load over the back axles so they (towmotors) don't go all the way in. If you use a pallet jack, you would likely want rolled steel that is scored for traction, and easy to roll a pallet jack around on.
Don't use flat rolled steel without the scoring or it will be slippery when water or oil gets on it.
Avoid doing the whole box if possible. Adds too much weight and kills your ability to haul alot of hazmat. Alot of hazmat loads need a wood floor.
Hope that helps

I was thinking the diamond plate to give traction to forks as well as feet. In the interim I've abandoned the idea, partly due to carriers wanting a floor you can nail into if needed. I've never done that and don't foresee it but will be prepared for it just in case.

My initial concern was based on the fact that some expediters do a significant amount of automotive related loads. Since much of the metals may have protective oils used on them, those oils might transfer to the wheels on forklifts and thus your diamond-plate floor. The diamonds may provide traction for lightweight equipment, but probable not for very heavy forklifts where oily residue may be on the wheels.

One solution to the slippery metal problem is to get some of those little sticky things that you put in your tub to keep from falling in the shower....

Really, though, the grip tape that they use for skateboards and other non-slip applications could be a solution to the slippery metal problem.

Another thought, as we have discussed in other threads, is to coat the wood with some type of material such as pickup bed liner. The bed liner material is also a great non-slip surface and could be applied to diamond plate as well to give the forklifts better traction.

Right now I'm thinking I might coat the floor and walls with something like Thompsons and perhaps add something like Line-X to the floor.

Unless there is alot of oil on the floor, the diamond plate should be sufficient for traction. We have had ours with snow and water on the floor and it didn't seem in these incidences to have any effect with regards to surface traction.
