The only time it would not be deducatable would be for 100% personal use. Wanted to go fishing for the weekend and the only stream was 60 miles away AND the truck was not in need of repair. Otherwise change the oil and use that as an excuse.

Hi all,

The answer to this question is confusing to a lot of DRIVERS.

If you are on the Road and Rent a Car to transport yourself to a hotel, Motel or home while your truck is in the shop for repairs. then the expenses is totally deductible.

If you drive the rental home, once you arrive home then any expense incurred is NOT Deductible. But, Once you leave your home to go pick up the truck, IT IS DEDUCTIBLE.

In your log books, You enter the time your truck goes in the shop and log off duty. even if you go home. then when it is picked up an back in service. you go back to your regular logging.

Anytime you rent a car on the road it is deductible. And also while you are home you can deduct the mileage on your car when you are using it for business i.e...Going to the post office, dropping off the TripPak, getting supplies to load the fridge in the truck, going to the bank and things such as this. Just remember to note the mileage in a note book and what the reason was for the trip.
Also do you know that if you were to fly home while your truck is being repaired or decided to visit the truck shows those tickets would be deductible, also if you decided to travel by car to the truck shows your mileage would be deductible there also

Hi All,

If your truck breaks down and you rent a vehicle, weather it be a truck or car to use or to continue with loads, it is DEDUCTIBLE no matter what, you are away from your home originally on business.

Remember once you leave your home with the truck, you are considered away on the road. if you do go home Once you arrive you are considered off duty.and the per diem does would be not deductible, But if you go to a Motel, it is.because you are away from home.

The vehicle rental and the per diem are an allowable deduction, including the fuel expense incurred, BUT_ The Mileage is not part of a vehicle rental. even though you might pay a per mile rate, IT CANNOT BE TAKEN AS A DEDUCTION,

Frank
