IS ANYBODY OPERATING UNDER YOUR OWN AUTHORITY USING A BROKER? I HAVE
A COUPLE OF STRAIGHT TRUCKS AND ALSO A COUPLE OF CARGO VANS. ANY
ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I have used only a couple in FL and TX. With straight trucks and vans, you will need to develop a relationship with them. I found it to be much more effective to do old fashion door knocking for business. You have to find specific companies in need of your specific equipment. Smaller loads are generally booked through logistic companies. My personal experience is that it requires much less time and effort to run for a company, especially when you factor all of the time and effort that is needed to be put forth.
Make sure you really have a passion for this side of the business, it is very tough and competitive.
