Bonded Load Question

Returning from Thompson MB last week we picked up a 200 mile run in Winnipeg going to Fargo. We arrived at the border in Emerson MB at 20:00 Friday and sat there until 14:00 Saturday waiting for clearance. This was 18 hours of wasted time with regular reports of "it shouldn'y be much longer." The problem was the load was "IN BOND" and the bond had to be released.

I did swear off any future Canadian freight pickups after this fiasco.

Can someone explain IN BOND vs a regular cross border shipment.

Someone pick that load up and took it into Canada in Bond a bond was issued it is like a certificate... And the paperwork should have stayed with the freight until the bond was cancelled by the US for reentry

Are you sure it wasn't a TIB? Temporary in Bond and item goes into a country and stays there for a while and comes back to the original country and no tariffs Are charged

A lot of people mistakenly referred to it as in bond... As opposed to a temporary in Bond it will usually be high-priced equipment on loan

There is a big difference between in bond freight and temporary in bond freight.... If you get to a border crossing and you have a problem with the clearance you can request to take the load in Bond and you take it to a government warehouse to be cleared at a later time..

The Cat People told me to wait near the border for their notification of clearance and so I did.

When you think of the process it is legally impossible to pick up in Bond freight in Canada to bring into the US if it was in Bond in Canada that would mean it was not cleared coming from a third country... It can get complicated LOL

That is correct... The van must have outside door locks and a sealed bulkhead... The driver cannot have access to the load... I've been burned but going into Canada... Had to spend the weekend in a compound at customs with the freight till the broker came in on Monday

That's why I'm scratching my head at how you ever got your hands on a in bond load? TIB is a completely different animal

I just can't see any extra threat with in bond shipments. They are stored in a secure warehouse until they are inspected and released.
