Hello my trucking friends. I was just reading about, back problems with your profession.
I wasn't going to say any thing about my coming back surgery, Tue. May 6. I have been quite on here for some time, been hurting with sciatic nerve problems bad sense Nov. took steroids,Vicodin, Darvaset, anti inflammatory, an two back injections, all this got the pain so it's livable. Sitting or laying down, which laying down was the best, only relief that worked
Read the article on backs take it seriously, learn some exercises and do them.
Sincerely Tom tinker

RE: sciatic nerve problems.....Boy can I relate to sciatica!!...Did my nerve damage when out shovelling snow and my back was exposed to the freezing weather too long. It's sooooo painful in it's full blown stages!! Your almost crippled. One day at my indoor job it was flaring up and I lifted something too heavy and took one step when I heard/felt a crunch like noise and I went to my knees...my whole body was twitching in pain and my left leg was kinda vibrating on it's own...The pain made me vomit it was so intense...after a couple hours the pain subsided a bit and I could finally drive home....Next day It was like a miracle SCIATCA pain was almost gone and could put my full weight on my left leg again!! BUT my 3 outside toes and the outside of my thigh I could stick a pin there and not feel anything....went to a nerve specialist and after some tests it was concluded I had crushed the nerve completely and severed it! Sounds serious but not really as the Dr. said they could repair the damage BUT the SCIATICA would return...I said NO THANK YOU!! At least now I can function and there's no real pain. I'll leave it as it is.

My Father-In-Law is a retired Chiroprator. I've been recieving chiropractic adjustments for almost 20 years, and I'm adjusted at least once every other month.

I make it a POINT to get this done every time I get a chance, because it helps SO MUCH,especially since-let's face it- drivers DO NOT have the most physically demanding job, and a lot of us tend to get lazy. We don't get out of the truck and MOVE to keep ourselves ACTIVE.

I realize that when ya gotta roll, ya gotta roll, and it CAN be tiring. I've been driving for over 20 years, so I understand.

A lot of people, even in this advanced day and age, think Chiropractors are "Quacks" because they don't throw prescriptions around like Halloween candy, but you don't ALWAYS need a pill to relieve the pain. A Chiroprator CAN help people with back pain, and keep it from coming back.

Your spine is your body's "Wiring Harness". It is filled with the NERVES that control EVERY FUNCTION OF YOUR BODY. The nerves exit through your spinal column to every portion of your body. They have to pass between the vertebrae on their way out, and if one of the vertebrae gets twisted out of line-the vertebrae have to move-it can pinch down on a nerve and cause PAIN.

A Chiropractor CAN help, because they can put the vertebrae back into the proper positions, free the pinched nerve, and STOP THE PAIN, most of the time PERMANENTLY.

BUT--most people don't realize that permanent relief can take TIME. Just one adjustment CAN relieve the pain, but it takes TIME to re-align the vertebrae in your spine to the proper position, especially if you've never had chiropractic treatments done and your spine is just a mess. If you injure your back, you may start with 2 treatments a week, and work your way down to one treatment a month. I go once every other month to maintain the health of my spine.

If you decide to start going to a Chiropractor, this is what may happen--

After the first visit, you may feel some mild muscle pain. It is because the doc has started putting your muscles back into their PROPER positions along your spine. This pain can be relieved with good ol' asprin and maybe a nap.

You may also get a mild cold. This comes from toxins that have built up in your nerves and muscles being released and leaving your body. You may have to take a "Sniffle Pill". The re-adjustment of your spine releases the toxins so your body can flush them away.

BUT---THESE SYMPTOMS WILL GO AWAY!! The doctor DID NOT make your condition worse!! Getting your spine back into good shape IS NOT a "Once and Done" deal. You HAVE to keep getting treatments, because the more you lay down on that table, the better you will feel.

Your pain WILL go away.

You will sleep better.

Your memory will improve.

You'll have more energy.

You will actually BECOME TALLER as your spine is put back into it's proper alignment. You won't grow 2 feet, but you may become a little taller.

Also-- HELP YOURSELF AVOID A BACK INJURY!!

If you have to perform a strenuous activity....

STRETCH BEFORE YOU START!! Bend, twist, flex, lean over. Prepare your body for the strain. Who cares if it may look strange!! It isn't the other person's back, is it?? It's YOURS. PROTECT YOUR BACK!! None of us are "Super Heros",are we?

If you're loading/unloading, use your LEGS to help carry the weight, and keep the weight close to your body. Your legs are the strongest part of your body. They carry your weight.

Stop and get out of that seat about every 4 hours. Walk around and check out your truck. Go to the potty. Stretch a bit.

Adjust your seat so you're a little closer to the wheel. Make sure your hips are level with your knees, and your elbows are slightly bent. You'd be surprised how much more comfortable you are.

Before you get out of bed, STREEEEEEETCH like an old hound on a sunny porch!! Get your blood flowing and your muscles awake with a long, luxurious stretch that's as big as you can make it. Throw those arms and legs out and go "AAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!" before your feet hit the floor. It gives you a good start for the day, and makes you feel good, too!

Another thing you can do is easier said than done-- LOSE SOME WEIGHT!! Just losing ONE MEASLY POUND can take 4 pounds of pressure from your back and knees!! I've lost 90 pounds over the last year, and I feel like a million bucks!! I can MOVE again!!

Take care of your back. You only get ONE back, you know. Don't be afraid of going to a Chiropractor. They DO help a LOT. The freight makes you money, but YOU have to move it!

Another thing you can do is something very simple. DRINK MORE WATER. Not soda, not tea,not Gatorade. WATER. It is a good idea to try to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water every day.

Just drinking more water can help a LOT. A lot of people mistakenly think they're hungry. That is NOT always the case. A lot of hunger pangs can be relieved with a big drink of WATER. You may not be HUNGRY. You may be THIRSTY.

Drinking more water CAN help you feel better, too!

It can improve your short term memory. It can even help you do MATH more easily.

It lubricates your joints.

It helps keep your skin in good condition.

It can help you lose weight. So DRINK that glass of water they plop down in front of you at the restaurant. It can help fill you up so you don't eat so much.

It can help you to have more energy. Yes, REALLY. I never realized how much my energy was depleted until I started drinking more water. When your body is dehydrated, it can sap your energy, so fill up the tank.

Water CAN help a LOT more than you think.

Wow, my doctor told me that cardio exercise such as walking fast enough to get the heart rate up would lower my blood pressure in the long run.

For me, it has worked.

A lot of people, even in this advanced day and age, think Chiropractors are "Quacks" because they don't throw prescriptions around like Halloween candy,...

No, people think Chiropractors are "Quacks" because you can go to 10 different Chiropractors and receive a thoroughly different diagnosis from each one of them. One will tell you that your left leg is shorter than your right leg, another will tell you your right leg is shorter than your left leg, and another will tell you it's a problem between your 3rd and 4th vertebrae and the next one will tell you it's a problem between the 1st and second vertebrae. Yet another will tell you that you have an underactive adrenal gland and/or an underactive pituitary, or underactive gallbladder, or underactive kidney, or problems with the liver.

The industry as a whole makes claims that are, even in this "advanced day and age," thoroughly and utterly unsubstantiated, and in many cases are directly refuted by a simple x-ray. Chiropractic medicine is a medical art that has one foot planted in science, and the other foot firmly planted in the cultism of alchemy and astrology traditions.

Not all Chiropractors are quacks, to be sure, but many of them are. Chiropractic medicine has its place, but be very careful how you choose your Chiropractor, and for what purpose.
I strongly urge you to do some research on Chiropractic medicine, both good and bad, so you can be well informed when making the decision to visit a Chiropractor.

If you don't do anything else at all, read this. It's an even-handed article loaded with common sense and intelligence.
Chiropractic: Does the Bad Outweigh the Good?

The Bottom Line from that article:
A good chiropractor can do a lot to help you when you have mechanical-type back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. But until the chiropractic profession cleans up its act, and its colleges uniformly graduate properly limited chiropractors who specialize in neuromusculoskeletal problems, you'll have to exercise caution and informed judgment when seeking chiropractic care.

Chiropractic medicine along with alternative medicine aims to treat and prevent disorders involving the neuromusculoskeletal system and its side effects. It may involve also the manipulative therapy of spine from top to bottom and the use of devices deemed to assist in therapy. Devices can be chairs, accessories and tables.
