Hello Chaz, I currently run for ASAP. And yes, alot of short runs mainly local. I have had longer runs too. But, as of right now, most of the runs never have anything coming back. I do a lot of driving back empty. They have not been good for getting loads from the drops or around them. Every New York run has always been a return empty. Now I have waited for runs also. I have waited overnight. Also time is sometimes a restriction on me. I do work a full 40 a week job also. So not all the time I can wait for long. Currently since X-Mas the loads have been almost none exsistent. I have went two weeks without anything. Now, I have been getting maybe 1 or 2 a week. They say January is very slow. Also I am driving a 1 ton cargo. I assume some straight trucks may be getting the loads. But, like I said this is not my bread and butter. If this is to be your only income, make sure you do your homework first. And also the local loads have usually been within 100 miles. Usually 50-60 mile runs. But like I said, they have not been very good in getting the return loads. My longest return empty was from Kansas. I waited a day and a half and was finally told to return; they had nothing they could get me. Good luck.
