A different log book question...

Since my "forced" retirement from expediting, I've been keeping up with the forums and all of the great topics you folks come up with,
Now, I have a question: One of my co-workers is going to deliver an order to Charleston, SC, in a 24' Ryder truck. It is under 26,000 gvw. Does he have to log the trip? (Can't believe I don't already know the answer). Also, do we have to some sort of signs on the doors? Thanks.:+

If it is a commercial venture, yes he has to log it.

Now, I'm not sure about the signs thing... I'm sure you'll get numerous answers on that one. But here's a story that may help:

This guy was driving his RV when he was pulled over by a state trooper. The cop asked what he was doing with all the art. The guy told him he was taking it to an art show. The trooper asked to see his log book.

So, apparently, the trooper was interested that it was a commercial venture, but not that the guy was using an RV to do it. If you've been to flea markets before, you'd see plenty of dealers using rental trucks.

I ran some things about a year ago for a friend. It was business equipment. I covered my truck signs so as not to be on my companies permits, ran no log and nevr had a problem. Afterwards I was told had I been caught I may have been able to talk my way out of the load itself. I could have been helping someone move. The truck was off duty etc. I was told that I would have been in trouble for no log because I was operating a commercial vehicle. Someone else said I could have just explained this was personal. I would write the DOT via the internet they will answer you Monday.

yes the driver will have to log and as far as the sign goes yes you will need one. One of our drivers was recently pulled into a rest area dot check and the company received a ticket because we did not have a sign on the door (rented star truck) nor did he have the temporary registration permit (72 hour permit) issued by the Michigan DOT.

Hope this is informative

Well guys my daughter just rented a Penske Truck and stopped at the scales and got her butt chewed out in Georgia for stopping at the scales. Yes it was her household stuff, but she also was carring several engines of mine for business. The officer in his usual annoying attitude told her never pull into the scales unless you are under lease to a carrier, and transporting there freight. She tried to say that I told her because she was over 26000lbs. that she was to stop and again he read her the riot act. He did tell her to stop at the agg. inspection in Florida, and again not the scales. She said thank you very much, she proceeded down to Edgewater Florida and never stopped at another scale with no incident. Even her contract with Penske told her to stop at the scales and to carry a log book. So the answer I would give is play dumb "it's got me this far in life" and tell if stopped, yep thats my stuff and go on your way. Good Luck.
