2007 Diesel Emission changes

Jeff Jensen's article on the new emission standards is timely and greatly appreciated. Cummins has a brochure out on the subject, which I picked up about a year ago. I think you can download it as well. It is an excellent piece: read it twice and need to re-read again. Urea tanks will not be used in N. America according to Cummins (only in Europe) for 2010? Det. Diesel also has something out.
I believe some engines might be exempt from some of the changes, based on credits? The ISC & ISL were exempt, along with the Cat C9 the last time around. Variable turbos will also be certainly included, and some form of catalytic coverters will be needed (unless the DPF does it). The DPF is going to be the biggest concern, but again, will all engines need it?
As I read the article, regular diesel will be around as well yet in Oct.? At any rate, cost of operation will go up, and if you must by new, I think one might get it done sooner than later.
The comment by Frt. of Georgia was telling: where to fit the DPF with those 'houses' some of you like. Guess you may be going back to the 84" sleeper, or get a 20' box. x(

We looked at a 07 KW 660 at the truck show, and they had the canister mounted on the frame rail but didn't seem to be impeding anything. The 07 Volvos had them basically in the same place. International had them inbetween the frame rail. No one was exactly sure on the additional costs. All said the canister needs serviced at 150,000 miles at a cost of $900 to $1,000 per service. That was on Cummins and a Volvo motor. Can't remember the engine in the International. I think a Detroit?
With the introduction of low sulfur fuel, all agreed to a 1 to 2 MPG loss. The upcharge for these changes most where saying 5 to 10,000.
That is in line with Jeff's article.
Saving a tree is taking on a new meaning.

Just asking: the KW 660 was a KW 600 with changes? In other words, the trucks with all the add-ons for 07 were Class 8 trucks? I am more concerned about C9 and ISL motors. I think these make better expedite motors for what we do. For the life of me, Class 8 trucks, unless you are a team, have lots of saved money, and can travel/convert truck to mobil home later in life, are way too costly... One can get a Baby 8 with class 8 features, and do a lot with it.
My main concern is what will happen to the C9/ISL or engines of that type. Will they get some credits and be exempt in any way??

You are correct, the 660 is the 600 replacement. Essentially the same appearance except it has composite headlights and a much larger grill. They needed a bigger grill to fit the large radiators that are now required on the 07 EPA models.
All of the engines you mentioned will be upfitted with these canisters and EPA equipment.
