    Canada Canadians

The following is a post from Letzrockexpress that originally appeared Feb. 20, 2006.I believe the original thread got disappeared in the last E.O. change over. I copied and saved it because I liked it. I'm glad I did. "Yeah, Canada is o.k... It reminds me of my attic. I don't go up there...

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

The nice thing about a tractor over a straight truck; if the expediting thing goes south, you can put a tractor on just about anywhere. If you don't need airride, a decent pup should be easy to find. The extra 4' can sometimes come in handy when 24' just won't do! US Special delivery, loaded...

Or just carry two large mirrors to create the effect that the freight is unloaded. A smoke bomb could add to the effect. So could a buxom co-driver.

Might Sequestration be a Boon for Expediters? If So, What Will You Charge?

Dateline: 03-01-13, Washington, DC. America Held Hostage: Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said cuts to the FAA and air traffic control could conceivable lead to smaller airports being closed and smaller cargo flights being canceled. He also stated that the sequestration would lead to delays...

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

I agree, but federal regulations may someday make this a viable option. I have always liked your idea (going back a few years) of pulling a 28' or 32' trailer instead of a D unit, especially if the carrier payed a premium for more than 24', but less than 53' and related weight.

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

The idea I pitched to the Con-Way dude was also geared toward the solo driver, but not so much as a regional operation. A solo could latch on to a NY to CA load and swap enroute without breaking a seal and crossdocking. As HOS keep changing and carriers find it difficult to recruit teams, a...

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

You're missing the point. A 28' pup would be more versatile than a D unit and could pull a 53'.

Might Sequestration be a Boon for Expediters? If So, What Will You Charge?

I don't se castration as being a boon to expediters. Maybe 20 some years down the road when today's expediters don't have any offspring to replace them the rates will go up. I plan on keeping my stuff, rates be ****ed.

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

I believe it should work out well for both the company and the O/Os. Companies wouldn't have to rely so heavily on teams. Class 8 tractors are cheaper than a class 8 straights and more plentiful on the used market. FedEx has the terminals for securely storing and staging trailers. If this...

Expedite With Tractor and Pup Trailer?

I ran that by the Director of Operations at Con-Way Now after dinner at the annual meeting. He made some mumbling noises, snorted and changed the subject. I never got a chance to explain my idea. Pups in addition to D units would allow for solo drivers to swap trailers, no need to crossdock...

    Winter wear and tear

Another option to a 12volt electric or a manual grease gun is a pneumatic grease gun. Bob Caffee plumbed their old truck (not sure about the new one) with a standard air fitting to use air tools and for inflating tires.

    Winter wear and tear

Maybe you should increase the frequency of your maintenance intervals. Three weeks of poor road conditions and bad weather should not have taken that severe of a toll on your truck's components. Also, when having your truck washed, make sure they wash more than just the shiny side or do it...

    Unloading Rules

I carry both; a 16', G-70, ⁵⁄₁₆ transport chain, a 24' tow strap and a set of pallet tongs. I rarely use the tow strap. Tow straps are elastic by design. When they break or become unhooked in use, that stored energy has to go somewhere, usually in the wrong direction. A quality chain will...

    The Driver Shortage

Ever since I've been in trucking there has been a purported driver shortage, mostly being fueled by the truckload segment of the industry. In all that time I have never heard anyone suggest that maybe, just maybe, there is a carrier surplus.
